I had planned a trip in the Colorado mountains that was going to be just me and some friends. Well things just recently changed and I was then going to be bringing my 11 year old son. Good deal, no problems. Well then my youngest (8 years old) who is determined to do it all by the time he is ten decided he needed to come. Sweet! Both of my boys love the outdoors and I am not going to pass up the opportunity to spend time with them in the mountains.
My problem is that I suddenly had a lack of gear problem. I don't own a suitable backpacking shelter for more than 2 people. I am relatively open to about anything as long as it makes for an enjoyable experience for my boys. I bought them both packs, whistles, and compasses to learn with. They have headlamps and are set for clothes and pretty much everything else.
I just haven't been able to decide on what to buy for a shelter. Any recommendations? I really like the looks of the Rainshadow from tarptent or the Hogback but I have emailed them for stock and haven't heard back. I am running out of time as I leave on the 4th of August. I also have considered tipi, tarps, and more traditional tents such as the Mountain Hardware Lightpath 3 (that is in the not so light high 5lb range, but cheap at $149 on sale)
Thanks for any ideas,
Trevor
