I know about the ChromeDome. Sun umbrellas work great for me except that they're totally useless (or worse) in the wind.

Have you ever heard of an umbrella made of mesh to let the wind pass through more easily and cause less of a sail-effect?

Even mesh would offer pretty good sun protection, and what if the mesh also contained a UV-absorbing finish? Or if you just smeared sunscreen all over it?

Do you know of UV-blocking fabric like that used in today's UV-blocking commercial clothing, but in a mesh form that allows air to flow through easily?

Mesh very thin threads of fabric and a lot of open space between the threads. The thread will stop the UV but UV will go right through the open space. You can still get a sunburn under a mesh unbrella, It would just take a little bit longer.

Imagine this: two layers of UV-treated mesh. Even one layer would work well if the sun angle is low. The point is to stop UV rays from hitting my skin by one means or another.

I'm mainly interested in the question: Where can I purchase UV-treated mesh, or alternatively where can I buy the UV-treatment chemical and treat some mesh myself?

Rockywoods sells a couple of different meshes touted as UV-resistant. They’re located here.

If you click on either of them, they sell samples as well (about a 4 square inch swatch) for cheap, though one of ’em doesn’t have a link to the sample. You may have to call to get the sample for that one.

Hope it helps!
