I've owned a MH phantom 45 and I own a rab summit 400 both great bags the rab is a more slim cut which I like but I'm only 5,8 and 140 the MH was a little roomier both great quality

Do you think either of the bags has an "optimistic" rating?

I have primaraly switched to using quilts, but I still have my Mountain Hardwear Phantom 0 for when the mercury really drops.

I have been happy with my Mountain Hardwear bag, not quite up to Western Mountaineering's bags quality, but close.

What are you wanting to use these bags for? Is this going to be your only bag? The 15* would be more veritile as a 5* is too much for a lot of places most of the year but if you need the warmer bag, then the RAB might not be warm enough

Without knowing any of the above information and taking a wild guess go with the RAB.

Well, i hope to use the bag mostly in West Coast – late spring through mid fall for places like Yosemite, Tahoe rim, Mammoth lakes and probably some international travel in the said period of time.

I guess it can be a little too warm for summer use, so any advise is highly appreciated. I have a 30 degree rated synthetic bag, which is really more of a 40-45 degree bag.

So any advice it highly appreciated…

I snagged my summit 400 on steep and cheap for a mear 169.99$ 32 ounces im warm in it to 15% with just a baselayer and stocking cap with a puffy jacket i can push it to a little under 10 Maybe the summit 400 would fit you bill if you can get one of steep and cheap for that steal of a price

I would defiantly go with the Rab over the MH though much higher quality

Just picked up a Rab 400 off SAC for $132. Currently using a Marmot Sawtooth 15*, and found it to be a little cold in the high 20s, low 30s (cold sleeper) and a little too roomy. I like what I've read about the Rab so far.

Just got my 400. Tag says the weight of the bag is 850g, and read several posts on here saying the bag is about 6oz lighter versus the 2lbs 4oz listed on SAC, Department of Goods, etc. It's definitely way cut slimmer than my Marmot Sawtooth which I prefer. 5'8" and 175lbs, pretty much no wiggle room. Bag is all yellow, not half yellow/half black like the pictures. Now I'm contemplating on swapping it for the 500.

William, just wondering if you're a warm sleeper?

I would say I am a pretty average sleepe, maybe slightly on the side of warm. All my bags that have been en rated I have found that rating accurate if that helps.

Thanks.

Did a quick chat with Department of Goods people and they said the 500 was 85 inches long. I take it those are the long versions they're selling?

Just a heads up, I've been eying these Rab deals like everyone else, but was a little concerned over the bag length issue mentioned in this thread so I just chatted with someone at DOG who checked with their Rab distributor. These are the lengths of the following bags:

Summit 400 – 78"
Summit 500 – 82"
Quantum Endurance 800 – 78"

So it sounds like the 500 is in fact the long version

A MH Phantom 32 was nowhere near the loft and quality of my WM Megalite. That's why I ret'd. it to REI unused and got the WM Megalite, a warmer and much more versatile bag with a FULL zipper.
