I have the intentions of buying the following product from REI to use in combination with Permethrin treated clothes:

http://www.rei.com/product/703338/repel-lemon-eucalyptus-pump-insect-repellent

The most important question I have about this product is does it have to be applied like your typical Deet spray? What I mean by this is does it have to be applied to the skin in order to be effective? I know Deet is not effective unless it is applied to the skin and was wondering if the likewise is consistant with Lemon Eucalyptus? Also what experiences have you had with it with regards to it being effective against skeeters. Thanks.

I've used it, both on my skin and on clothing (socks, hat brim). It seems pretty effective to me, it was during a bad mosquito period in the Sierra last summer when they were pretty thick (i.e. for several hours beginning late afternoon and until well after dark, and once the sun came up – numerous mossies were waiting on the tent netting in the morning..) It's been rated as effective as the lower concentrations of DEET (article in Wall St. Journal a number of years back). I wouldn't expect it to be a semipermanent effect like permethrin when sprayed on clothing, just a few hours' worth of protection is my guesstimate. But it won't dissolve plastic like DEET will.

I've used lemon Eucalyptus on my skin and it works fairly well. I am opposed to DEET. It is not intended for clothing, IMO that would be a waste of money and effort. The permethrin alone on clothing works like a charm though!

I soaked my bandanna in it.

I was taking a rest break in heavy mosquito season so wore a head net and layed the bandanna on my chest.

The bandanna seamed to attract mosquitoes and was soon several landed on it.

I have also had similar results with Deet and Picaridin. So I'm not saying it doesn't work, just that sometimes nothing but clothing and a headnet works.

picaridin is the bug juice of choice for me. Seems to be as effective as Deet, but none of the bad aspects and it doesn't stink like other repellents.

I used it last year in the Sierra. I put it on my skin and it lasted about 10 minutes. I'm sure it works better for some people than others. This year I'm taking deet.

I have found that if the bugs are going to bite, they are going to bite. I mostly use the lemon eucalyptus bug juice but also use mega deet (jungle juice) occasionally as well. I prefer L E over deet just because something that can melt my clothing just makes me think it should not be applied to my bare skin. They both seem to work the same, sometimes they work and other times not so much. I use the spray on the trail if needed and give myself a bug juice shower upon reaching camp, then leave it up to layers of cloths and fire smoke to chase them away.
