I'm trying to make a pair of aluminum instep crampons. I just bought a 12" x 4" 1/8 inch sheet of aluminum and would love some input on the best way to turn it into a functional instep crampon. Beauty not required. Functionality is all I care about. Since aluminum instep crampons aren't being sold right now, making my own for my upcoming SHR thru-hike seems to be the way to go. Any ideas/patterns/thoughts?

I have tried instep crampons many years ago a found them useless. Yaktrax are a better choice for flat terrain. Now after my SAR experiences, I would encourage you to to look at full aluminum crampons. Some things, like life, are worth the weight.

I would also say no to instep crampons. They are only useful on flat ground in my opinion. On any kind of slope, you need traction at the heels and toes. The passes you will cross on the SHR are steep. If the snow is soft, no problem, you won't need crampons at all. But if you need anything, you'll want real crampons. I have some CAMP aluminum crampons that are about 13 1/2 oz for the pair. When are you going?
