Generally, the medium sized backpacks go up to about 20 inches for the torso, and 32 inches for the waist, with the large size going above those. However, I happen to be right on the threshold, with a torso of 19.5 inches and a waist of 33. Can anybody give me some advice on whether it would be better to go up a size to a large or down a size to a medium? Thanks

Can anyone help me out?
My choice would be going with a longer torso, but I think getting the correct fit is most important. I don't like weight on my shoulders. If I where you I would try both and keep the size that fits you best or search for a better fitting pack. Currently I use a Aarn pack with adustable torso so I get a great fit.
If you get a membership, the recent State of the Market articles on lightweight internal frame packs (last fall) and on frameless packs (going on now) have lots of information on size and other fitting issues–worth the membership fee just for that, IMHO.
Jason, I second Mary's comments. And also, try on as many packs as possible. Not all pack makers use the same standards in labeling there packs. Also, if you can't try them on, call the manufacturer. They can best advise you how they think their packs will fit you. Good luck.
Jason, no one here is really going to be able to give you advice that you can rely on 100%. Backpack fit is as personal and important as footwear fit. There really is nothing you can do other than trying both sizes on and seeing which one fits better. Every brand fits differently regardless of what they published on their sizing chart. For example, Im an 18.5" torso, and like you I'm on the border. I'm right where most brands end their size smalls, and start their size mediums. I've been through probably 10 packs at this point, and while I fit a size medium out of 9 of those packs, there was this 1 arcteryx pack where the medium was way too big…like uncomfortable premature trip ending big. But, according to their sizing chart, a Medium should have been a perfect fit. Packs with an adjustable torso will give you a bit more fudge room to work with, but honestly, either try em on both in person, or order 2 sizes from an online retailer with an excellent return policy. That's all the advice I can really give you, even though I consider myself fairly experienced with pack fit these days.
Looking at your stats, I would venture to say that a medium will fit better than a large…the waist belt isn't of much concern. I find that being on the upper threshold of the belt measurement better than trying to fit into a belt thats too large. Plus most people lose weight during their trips. I have a friend whose about 6'2" 19.5" torso, and wears a 32 pantwaist and he usually gets medium packs
Thanks for the advice guys. I would go try on backpacks in the stores, but I'm actually out of the country right now with no real outdoorsy stores nearby, so I can't really try on packs in person, and won't be able to for four more weeks. And, I would like to have a backpack ready when I get home.
