How do you deal with getting into your bivy an not have a swarm of bugs follow you in?
This past weekend I went on a backpacking trip to an area that was infested with noseeums. I tried getting into my bivy quickly, but a bunch of the little suckers landed on my clothes and got a free ride into the bug-free zone. I ended-up covered in bites.
I was hoping to avoid the use of DEET when sleeping if at all possible…
Jun 20, 2011 at 3:29 pm #1751393If you treat your bivy with permethrin, the nasties and nozzies will still fly in with you, but shortly after landing on the bivy fabric, they will die.
Hopefully, you won't get bitten quite as much.

1. Treat clothing and bivy with permethrin
2. Keep bivy and sleeping bag in pack until right at sleep time
3. Run hands over clothing right before entering bag for the night -
