Recently decided to make the jump from tent to tarp/bivy combo. I have an MLD Grace Solo on the way, but wanted to take a stab at making my own bivy. I was going to use M50 and some .74 cuben, but since M50 is unavailable figured I would give 5mm silk a shot. Ended up with a final weight of 4oz.
I'm 6'5" with a touch of claustrophobia so I intentionally made this a pretty spacious bivy. If I wanted to shave every gram I probably could have gotten it into the very low 3oz range, but I was more concerned with making sure I could use it w/o feeling like I was in an envelope.. I treated the silk with Revivex and it sheds spray very well so far. I have a little experience with silk although not much, so time will tell how well the DWR holds up. Pics and specs below.
Might be hard to tell from the pic, but I tapered the height of the bathtub wall from 7 inches along the sides to 10 inches at the center of the foot section. All about the spaciousness…Don't mind the brush pile in the background.

Decided on a nanoseeum mesh around the shoulders & head. A couple of sleeping bags in there to show the shape & height.

Head shot

Length: 86"
Width at head/shoulder/foot: 21/35/26
Bathtub wall height: 7" tapered to 10" at foot end
Weight: 4oz
Color: Navy blue
Zipper: #3 YKK
Thanks-
Ryan
