What size grosgrain ribbon do most people use for the edging around backpack straps? I'm stuck between 1/2" and 3/4", I'm thinking the 1/2" would be better. I will be using it on 3d mesh straps similar to the golite ion. Thanks!

1/2" is awfully small – may be hard to work it around the strap edges.
I'm sure some of the talented DIY'ers will chime in w/actual experience.
3/4" if not 1" of the soft stuff from Quest Outfitters.
1/2" is to small and hard to work around the corners and there is not enough width to bind the edges of the straps.

Makes sense, easier to work with is always better. What about the stuff from rockywoods? Would it be about the same? My plan is to make a pack exactly the same as an Ion, except with xpac fabric, a roll top, and a lycra mesh front pocket.
That pack design sounds exactly what I am in the market for! I was think about making mine out of 200D Oxford since it's on sale at Seattle Fabrics right now. Please keep us updated on how the pack is coming :)
Hey Brian,
My advice would be to call for more info or order some sample swatches of Rockywoods' grosgrain in the size, type and color that you are interested in using. They have many colors and sizes and curiously enough they have what must be two different types in black of the same size.

I've used what Quest calls the "firm" grosgrain to bind the edges of my hip belt and it worked OK. It is stiff and a little challenging around the corners. I have yet to use the "soft" grosgrain that I ordered from Quest but I believe that it will work better for binding the edges.
Copied and pasted from Quest's site.
"The grosgrain is available in a SOFT style and a FIRM style. The soft style is more recommended for binding edges and the firm works well for use as a lightweight webbing (ie: tent pullouts, strapping but note on some buckles it may be too slippery with buckles that are under tension)."
Here is the link to their product page of grosgrain.

You'll have to scroll down a little after the "nylon webbing page" appears.

I've had the desire to make one similar to what you describe for a while now too. I think you have a great idea there.;-)
I look forward to seeing some pictures.

I wouldn't put any orders in yet, this will be my first myog pack lol. I saw the stuff on quest, but I had already ordered everything on rockywoods. If the rockywoods stuff is too hard to work with I will have to get the soft stuff from quest. Thanks for the help guys!
