So I took the cuben/carbon fiber camp stool out this weekend on a 31-mile overnighter. Rubber-banded it to the support straps on my halfpack 2.0, which worked fine for the entire hike. Also decided to bring my movie projector so we could make a fun movie night out of it and give the chair a good test. Sat it in for nearly two hours while first enjoying dinner, followed by "Creature From The Black Lagoon" projected on my 63" (diagonal) white tyvek movie screen (and a nice glass of scotch as well).

I shifted around quite a bit during the movie, legs out, legs in, etc. Chair stayed as comfortable as a camping stool can the whole time. Had a good look at the stitching when I got back – everything looks great, no stitching pulling out/tearing/etc., continues to look solid!

I certainly won't take the stool out on every trip, or even most of them, but when I get a hankering to have a fun movie night in the backcountry, the chair will come along!

Whoa! You can't just glaze over the multimedia stuff! What did you use? A pico projector? Netflix on an iPad? Please do tell.

When you mentioned movie night in the other thread, I thought you were just doing some yanking of chains and pulling of legs. Do you really have this set up? If so, why don't we have a pic already?!?

No, it wouldn't be in an every day kit, but I can see it being a very interesting and fun way to prove a point to my scouts… My pack weights the same as theirs, but then I pull out a couple chairs, a movie screen, projector, something to run it all, maybe a couple boxes of movie candy and some stove-top popcorn. The looks on their faces would be worth the effort!

[on edit] By the way, what do you weigh? What do you think this setup would go to?

Actually, yes, quite serious. I know it's anathema to many people here, but I had a riot watching a movie 'on the big screen' way up in the mountains. And a great, old kitschy movie at that. My hiking buddy and I did our own version of Mystery Science Theater 3000 while watching and had a ball. Of course, it helped that the temps had cooled and the humidity had receded, and there was nary a skeeter or gnat about to bug us (pun intended, thank you very much).

And it worked incredibly well. The projector was quite bright, even on a pretty clear, well-lit-by-moonlight night, so it was easily watchable. The mini speaker I brought along was plenty loud enough, and the homemade tyvek screen was easy to string between two trees. And if I had a bigger piece of tyvek, the projector could have easily projected a larger image. I used a 63" (diagonal) piece of tyvek, and should have moved closer as the picture was actually exceeding the screen size.

The details:

— My iPhone (which I carry on every backpacking trip, so it's not added weight for this purpose).

— MicroVision SHOWWX+ Laser Pico Projector w/extra battery and cable to attach to iPhone

— Philips Universal Pencil Portable Speaker (SBA1600/37)

— Hard case for the projector (unnecessary really, don't think I'll use it again and I'll save the 2.5 ounces)

— Tyvek screen and some line to tie it to a couple of trees. The tyvek was washed to make it pliable.

The chair, of course, isn't a necessary part of this.

Next I'm going to see how well I can pop corn in my Jetboil Sol!

I know, I know. But I backpack to get away from people and cars, not necessarily to get away from everything. Sometimes I want to commune with nature while I'm out there. And sometimes I want to sit and watch an old B movie and be silly and laugh and have fun. And it was fun, at not that much of a weight penalty (less than a pound – I don't know exactly because I don't weigh individual stuff).

I must say I am shocked ..I didn't know they had projectors that small.

Talk about cutting edge! Sounds like a great night. Too bad they never released the 3D version of CFTBL. Great choice for the Drive In without the Drive.

That is so cool. A projector the size of the I-phone, amazing!

That may make the xmas wish list.

You can see a shot of the screen here (I was the trip organizer). I might have been the one who set the whole pico projector thing in motion with an off the cuff remark, but it was all Doug I. on the follow-through.

Perhaps a slightly closer approximation of what we saw.

And it was all Doug W.'s idea, I'm innocent.

Actually this works quite well.

The only word of warning (I learned this the hard way) is that you should make sure you have enough oil in the bottom of the pot. The popcorn kernels should be covered. Adding some coconut oil to olive oil is the best combination I've tried. Very yummy!

Now I know what to do with that old piece of Tyvek I've had sitting around since I switched to a polycro ground cloth.

Hey, wait: have you posted details on this ultralight chair of yours? I think the projector and Tyvek screen are totally cool, but I want to see the chair design!

Yes.

I was sitting in the hot pool at the base of the falls when the photo was taken.

Sheer heaven!
