Does anyone have any experience with Patagonia's Torrentshell? I'm looking for a jacket that is a good windbreaker and breaths well enough to use as a casual jacket, but can serve as a light duty rain jacket – not for mountain use, water resistant might be good enough, if I could figure out a clear definition of wateresistant.

I’m looking at the Torrent mainly because it fits me well – the Houdini is too tight. Can’t tell just standing around the store if the Torrent is really breathable.

Also considering the Precip, but it looks kind of…ahh, not made well.

Any input, suggestions, advice, much appreciated.

I have the women's version of the Torrentshell.
I received it as a birthday gift in this past winter.
I have worn it around town in a couple of storms. It has seen one heavy storm for about an hour. It kept me dry and did not wet through at all. I kept it as opposed to the Precip I had ordered for myself because it was an ounce lighter and fit better. Both seemed to be of similar construction.

I've worn the pullover version of this and love it. It breathes well enough to wear it all the time and is great during storms. Patagonia makes an amazing, lightweight, waterproof/breathable jacket, the M10, buy the price tag is HEAVY! I was lucky enough to snag a deal on it and it's now my goto jacket for everything.

I received one as a gift in October. Overall I think it's a great rain jacket. I don't really like the plastic feeling of the liner, but other than that it's fine. I have not used it hiking yet, but I have used it cycling in some serious downpours with great results. Another high quality product from Patagonia.

Thanks to all for your helpful responses. I'll go ahead and get a Torrentshell.

You might look into the M10 jacket. This is BPL so it seems like although 4x the price it is a worth competitor to the torrentshell. TBH i bought the Torrentshell at Rei on a 20% off deal and returned it. It sat on a hanger for a week and the more i thought about it i decided i don't need two waterproof coats and i only really have a need for a waterproof jacket that also breaths.

Good luck getting the Torrentshell to breath at all. I hear the M!0 breaths like a champ?!
