What's the maximum fluid temperature you can pour into a Platy bottle or bladder without damaging it? Anybody make coffee, cocoa, or tea in one? Can it handle near-boiling water (assuming one could pour it in without burning hands all to heck)?

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,
Browsing through the posts, I finally found one I could provide information for! :)

The platy bladder can handle boiling temps. I routinely pour boiling water right out of my pot into my water bladders. Heads up though, the thin plastic doesn't insulate at all and you will burn your hand like no tomorrow if you don't use a glove/bandana or something similar. I typically do this in the winter when I am melting snow. The plastic will also lose some stiffness and become very flexible with the hot liquid. It does however, regain this stiffness when it cools. My experience is with platypus bladders only, so I am not sure of others.

Thanks! I am planning to rig up my 3 liter Platy Hoser as a shower. It would be far easier to add 1 liter of near boiling water to 2 liters of regular creek water for a moderately warm shower (vs warming three liters separately or trying to mix water in a container I don't now carry). Obviously, the boiling water would mix and cool down quickly, but the plastic would be in direct contact with the hot water at the neck and top of the bladder as it was being poured in.

I would suspect that by putting boiling water in them you would reduce the life of your bottles. Hot Water in the bottles reduces the yeild and fatigue strength of the plastic so I would be a little more gentle with them while hot and wouldn't try to squish them into pack pockets with hot liquids.

i was trying to figure out why the OP wanted to do this but then i read the last post and i was like… :D funny…

good to know that i could do this… i like to go to bed clean when i can…

could you show your setup for this?

I don't have a setup yet… I've got a 3 liter Platy Hoser currently set up as a gravity filter. I've got an a drill and an extra cap just itching to be peppered with holes.

I'd rather have the old Platypus shower kit, but they stopped making it last year and I can't find one still in stock anywhere.
