Going to the boundary waters this year and need to get a shoe than can pull double duty as a light weight hiker and portaging (for canoes) water shoe. I'd like something enclosed so I don't have to worry about little pebbles getting in the shoe while walking through the water. Any of the innovates that are made for lots of water use?

If you're not doing a portage heavy route, just take an old set of mesh sneakers. I took my old yard work sneakers on my BWCA trip last year (6 days, 50 miles on water, 5 miles of portage). Worked awesome. Bring a set of flip-flops to putter around camp while the shoes dry.

We will be doing numerous and long portages. I also have some other river trips and hiking trips planned and just wondering if there is a good water shoe that also does well on the trails?

I use Salomon Tech Amphibians for a good mix of solid trail shoe and water shoe. It has excellent tread, but does have some mesh so you can get a few pebbles here and there though. IIRC, Vasque Watergates may meet your criteria. Take a look at those and see what you think.

One of the most comfortable all purpose shoes I have found are the Merrel Waterpro amphibians. They have a decent Vibram sole, are relatively light, and are mostly mesh panels with a gel substance used for padding. Awesome for kayaking, hiking, and cycling.

Ok thanks. I got the newer (I think) version of these today and i think they will do well for an assortment of activities.
