Hey all,

I'm brand spanking new to quilts. I'm looking to get something for use on the JMT in August. I currently use a Marmot Arete and I sleep hot. I'm thinking of getting a 30 degree quilt (my assumption of what I'll need). I'm 6'3" so listed info is for long versions. I'll be using whatever I get with my Katabastic pinon bivy, and a Peak Elite AC pad (ground sleeper).

I'm wondering what gotchas others have run into with making the bag -> quilt switch. I've been reading what forum posts I can find and it seems like people get used to them pretty quickly and I haven't really seen many gotcha type items.

My standouts so far are the hammockgear burrow summer long +1oz overfill, or the Katabastic Palisade. There's about a $100 price difference, which is pushing me towards the hammockgear burrow.

Any suggestions? Below are the options that have been on my radar

Quilt / weight / price

Katabastic Palisade 30 18.4 345
HG Burrow L +1 overfill 30-35 17.5 240
jrb sierra sniveler 25-30 24 310
TiGoat sniveler ? 21 300
Enlightened Revelation 20 20.5 $350
MLD Spirit 30 XL 26 230
Warbonnet mamba long 20 23 270
nunatak Arc Ghost Large 16 400

Well you're comparing apples to apples slightly. The Katabatic has 2 oz more down as well as a variable cut as well as sewn in foot box. Both of which, I appreciate. As far as the others, the enlightened is a great quilt, but a little heavier, the spirit is nice, but synthetic, the nunatak is nice, but more money and the same weight. Don't know much about the JRB and Ti Goat ones, but my recommendation would be for the katabatic especially because of the bivy you already have.

Thanks for the comment, I appreciate you having a look.

I do want to point out that the burrow does have a snaps footbox, or a sewn in for $30 more. getting it to the same 10oz down fill long with a sewn footbox makes it $270 compared to the palisade's $350

Hmmm.

I was actually thinking the snaps footbox might be a benefit for a hot sleeper such as myself, but I suppose it'll also be less efficient. I don't expect foot drafts through my bivy though.

I suppose that'd put the burrow @ more around 17.5-18.5. So the weight would definitely be apples to apples. Thanks very much for pointing out the fill difference.

$80 to go with the manufacturer of my bivy + a bag made to be the fill I want vs. overstuff I guess it boils down to.

Whats the width on the burrow? Most hammock quilts are too narrow for ground use.

I had mine made at 54" wide and I use it for both hammock and ground. I find the snaps handy and frustrating. I like being able to open it up, but moving around I tend to unsnap quite often. If I did it over, I would opt for the sewn in footbox. It is a real quality piece though.

I was going to suggest this too. Although I do not have mine yet, I did place an order with him earlier this year and am awaiting it's arrival… All I hear though are great things about his quilts, so I am looking forward to getting mine! I am not sure if he is taking orders at the moment though, he has been pretty busy this year from what I understand. Probably worth looking into though.

I'm very partial to zippered footbox with drawstring closure. Really allows nice venting options, which I appreciate.

Of those you listed, I have experience with enLIGHTened quilts and Nunatak quilts. I love my enLIGHTened quilts (I have 4), and the Nunatak quilts are top notch and he'll make 'em however you want 'em, but the wait is long.

Earlier this year Javan Dempsey talked about taking a break for the summer, but he certainly makes great kit so if he's not too backed up you might want to check him out as well.

As far as bag to quilt switch, I took to it immediately, no gotchas at all. Haven't owned/used a bag in over two years – this includes winter backpacking in the mid Atlantic.

I am with doug, I have 3 enlightened equipment quilts now. For reference I have had both the jrb quilt you list and the ti goat quilt you list. You can see what I have now.

I think you are leaving off width in your analysis…not saying you need a certain width, but saying that the weight and fill weights are factors of the quilts width, so I think you need to look at that too.

I personally think almost anyone needs a 52 wide or at least 50. My experience has driven me to the 56 tim sells now (why I have 3).

You would have a hard time getting one of tims quilts by august right now so he told me last week, I wanted to order my 4th and he told me he was so backed up he couldnt see daylight.

If I had to have a quilt today, i would buy the katabatic alsek….i dont like the sewn in footbox, but they make a great quilt.

Second choice would be the ti goat sierra sniveler, I wouldt have switched from this quilt if it were wider than 52. If you are thinner, this may be the perfect quilt. One draw back is the head hole…lots of folks like it, I think its a waste of weight and makes for a rough spot. I have gear I wear around camp and dont want to wear my quilt.

I have a warbonnet uq for my hammock, and they are fine, but there are lighter quilts out there…

Never had a stormcrow quilt, but would like to see one, one day. I have to wonder why they are so much less than the competition, but hey, maybe thats a great thing.

To sum it up, if you can get tim to make you a quilt by your deadline, I think there are none better, if not, I would go katabatic or ti goat.
