I was wondering if anyone has found a DIY source for 3/8" or smaller webbing suitable for pack straps…and the plastic hardware to go with it.

Osprey has been using some 7mm webbing on their latest light weight packs and I would love to get my hands on something similar as well. The straps feel good enough and should be a good way to shave some weight.

I know you can get grosgrain in such narrow widths, but I would like something with more heft and durability. I also hear that it's a pain to get grosgrain to not slip in most plastic hardware.

I have been looking myself. Nothing in 1/2" so far…'cept crossgrain.

The smallest I know of is 1/2" nylon webbing from Quest Outfitters. You can get 1/2" ladderlocks from Rockywoods. Both companies offer cheap shipping and excellent customer service.

Rockywoods now has 3/8 nylon webbing that may work.

Still it's the hardware that seems the hardest to come by. I've found some side-release and slip lock buckles designed for pet collars too. It seems though that elusive tension lock though (which is what I REALLY want) is going to be the difficult pieces to track down.

I'm wondering if 1/2" tension locks would work. Still hard to find but maybe easier than 3/8 and it'd just leave a tiny amount of wiggle room on the sides that shouldn't be noticeable in use.

Thanks for the help so far guys!

Found some 1/2" tension locks also from rockywoods.com

I may have to experiment with me. Not quite as small as I'd like to go, but should be interesting to play with and saves some weight regardless.

Thru hiker has some great 1/2 flat weave nylon webbing so does OFW. OFW has some curved ladder lock in limited supply I have not seen. Personally I like the new design of buckles that Osprey uses because of strength and better looking to the eye. Than the old traditional Ladder locks and buckle design of old.

For 3/8" 10mm webbing Ykk makes a really neat plastic buckle you get 25 for $7.99 on ebay Daryl Clark ordered some and likes them.

New interesting product from Sea to Summit to hack in to straps for a pack and old school boom proof aluminum buckles or rock climbing pack look. The buckles look pretty cool anodized different colors. I was looking at them at the REI in san diego.
