I'm just throwing this out there (if this has been done, I apologize). What gear would you choose?

Rule 1. What you choose is what you would have to use for one year.
    Rule 2. 3 season (Avg temps: High-70, Low-40) Think JMT'ish terrain/area.

    Go!

I love the "No poles. I can find sticks.".

Haha. That finding sticks bit is hilarious. Although clearly you don't live in AZ where we have an abundance of rock and if you're lucky enough to find a stick (or anything that isn't rock) it's probably covered in enough thorns to make concertina wire look like down. So i'll keep my carbon poles!

I guess my dream list would be made of unobtainium:

    Nice roomy tent 0 oz.
    10* sleeping bag 0 oz.
5" thick insulated air pad 0 oz.
My current pack is fine, but would of course be better in a fabric that also weighs 0 oz.
Of course everything else should weigh 0 oz., too!

I might be able to backpack until I'm 100 with that combo!

As for sticks–they wouldn't work for me. The length I need for hiking is quite a bit shorter than what is needed to hold up my shelter. Problems with being a shorty! Besides, a stick stout enough not to break under stress is quite heavy compared to my trekking poles!

Mary, instead of trekking poles, you can get adjustable cross-country ski poles.
