I'm just throwing this out there (if this has been done, I apologize). What gear would you choose?
Rule 1. What you choose is what you would have to use for one year.
Rule 2. 3 season (Avg temps: High-70, Low-40) Think JMT'ish terrain/area.Go!

May 26, 2011 at 9:53 am #1741413I love the "No poles. I can find sticks.".
May 26, 2011 at 7:28 pm #1741627Haha. That finding sticks bit is hilarious. Although clearly you don't live in AZ where we have an abundance of rock and if you're lucky enough to find a stick (or anything that isn't rock) it's probably covered in enough thorns to make concertina wire look like down. So i'll keep my carbon poles!
May 26, 2011 at 7:43 pm #1741633I guess my dream list would be made of unobtainium:
Nice roomy tent 0 oz.
10* sleeping bag 0 oz.
5" thick insulated air pad 0 oz.
My current pack is fine, but would of course be better in a fabric that also weighs 0 oz.
Of course everything else should weigh 0 oz., too!I might be able to backpack until I'm 100 with that combo!
As for sticks–they wouldn't work for me. The length I need for hiking is quite a bit shorter than what is needed to hold up my shelter. Problems with being a shorty! Besides, a stick stout enough not to break under stress is quite heavy compared to my trekking poles!
May 26, 2011 at 8:09 pm #1741640Mary, instead of trekking poles, you can get adjustable cross-country ski poles.
