I got ahold of a couple packs of Esbit cartridges, along with a German made Esbit stove. Neat little stove, reminds me of the GI issued hexamine stove thats been around forever. Although the Esbit is made better.
I admit to having been a total skeptic that Esbit would bring two cups of water to a rolling boil. I think I made fun of this stove a while back, along with alcohol stoves Ive already tried. I tried it with the esbit stove and it did bring a pint of cold water, in cold weather, to a vigorous rolling boil in eight or nine minutes. I am impressed.
I also tried the Esbit cartridges with the Vargo Triad titanium stove flipped upside down. That didnt work well, it only brought the water to a sub boiling point (hot simmer). The pot would sit too low on the Vargo, actually touching the top of the Esbit cartridge while it was burning.
I would use this stove system on backpacking trips, but Id use the original German issue Esbit stove and you also need to make sure your pot is covered while you are attempting to boil water.
You need to understand, I have a long backpacking history that goes way back and Ive tried just about everything. Thats why I was skeptical of Esbit. Prior to Esbit, the only stoves that would actually boil water for real have been cartridge stoves and white gas stoves (or a campfire).
I can see myself replacing my Jetboil PCS with the Esbit system for many trips, possibly most. I guess I am being absorbed by the borg, gradually, gradually.
