So, my wife won an 8gb current gen Ipod Touch (the one that shots 720p HD video) and I've seen things like this: http://bad-elf.com/products/gps/ that can be attached to it for GPS purposes. The cost is a bit prohibitive simply because a high-sensitivity GPS garmin product (e.g. an etrex Vista H) is not significantly more expensive, but the ability to shoot HD video, take OK pictures, and have GPS available makes it seem somewhat more alluring. It would also eliminate the need to carry one of our clunky older Android phones (which shoot junk video and take poor pictures) for the purposes of track creation and the use of checkpoints. I just don't know how well these add-on devices work.

I'm also looking at adding GPS capability to my iPod Touch 4. Just checked the Magellan toughcase over on Magellan's site (http://www.magellangps.com/Products/iPhone-Products/toughcase) and it lists for $100. It is heavy (212 g / 7.5 oz) but one also gets a tough case and an additional battery which supposedly doubles battery life. However Magellan says it is not compatible with the my newer 4th gen. :-(

so I'll look at the GPS adapters and weigh their merits. My big concern is battery life and recharging on the trail. What will the package weigh and cost?
