Hey guys, first time of this forum, I'm 16 and in love with backpacking, cant get it out of my mind, and i put together a comprehensive list of what take every time I go out and hike, I have most of my gear dialed in but i was hoping for suggestions regarding how to make my 15 pound lighter, possibly sub 12 pounds and be the only ultra light 16 year that I know of, at least personally, haha. All feed back is welcome, my nest trip will be this weekend on the long path loop, every weekend until then there will be some sort of overnight trip until summer where i am planning to do an extended 3 week plus trip, given that i'm ready.

Sleeping (50 oz)
Campmor 20 degree down sleeping bag – 36oz
Neo air – 14 oz

bug repellent (1 oz)
liquid soap (1 oz)
quick-drying pack towel (2 oz)
extra ziplocks and garbage bags (2 oz)
Clothing (31.5)
Rain jacket – 13.6 oz
North face insulated jacket (to be purchased) – 10.9 oz

I need a lighter sleeping bag for the summer, that will reduce some weight but all responses, positive and negative will be gladly appreciated, as well as all feedback.

I too am young and know of no other UL or SUL person my own age. (except my brother) Here is what I would do for my gear list.

Campmor 20 degree down sleeping bag – 36oz (get a down quilt! I know you might have to save for awhile(like I did) but it is worth it.

Neo air – 14 oz ( you are young get a closed cell foam pad!

Solo Marmot eos 1p – 44 oz ( get a tarp and some bug netting

Marmot eos 1p ground sheet – 6 oz (get a gossamer gear polycryo

Opsrey Talon 44 – 42 oz ( you can find a lot lighter packs

Outdoor research rain cover – 5.3oz ( use a pack liner

MSR quick Solo 1.3L pot – 7.6oz ( get a ti or beer can pot

MSR windpro stove – 6.8oz (use a alcohol or esbit stove

Aquamira – 3 oz ( repackage it into smaller bottles

That should save you some weight. Hope it helps.

I would think a tarp might be your cheapest weight reduction. A poncho/tarp combo will save you shelter weight and you can lose the rain jacket. An alcohol/esbit setup is cheap and really fun to make with a beer can pot. Window sealer is a cheap alternative to the GG polycro. At your age, a closed cell foam pad is probably enough and will save a little weight and be nice to sit on in camp; If its long enough, you can probably do without a groundsheet too. And try to shave a little bit off of everything; it adds up fast. And you could easily lose 1.5-2 pounds on a lighter pack.
