I was very interested in the Sigma SD1 because of the sensor, and knew this would be a high-end camera, carrying a high-end price. I just didn't expect the shell-shock of $9,700.

I saw that and about choked. Sigma is definitely not a standard-issue camera company—they're proudly quirky. And maybe completely bonkers. However, suddenly the M9 seems quite the bargain. :-)

I thought there was something goofy in the price quote so I checked the Japanese site:
It's listed there as ¥70,000, which is about $860.00
http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20110520_447248.html (It's at the top 7万円)
Sigma is not doing very well, and they cannot afford to miss with this camera. ¥9,700 would be an insane marketing move.
But Sigma's US site is stating that it has an MSRP of 9,700
http://www.sigmaphoto.com/news/sigma-corporation-of-america-to-ship-sd1-camera-in-early-june
However, the site also shows KITS going for cheaper than the body by itself. (around 7,800 U.S.).
I can't believe they would sell that body for less than $2,000. The DP2 compact is going for $570 right now.
For that kind of money I'd be getting a digital rangefinder with a script L on it.
The smaller-chip SD15 lists for US$1500 and streets for about a thousand, so my guess is Miguel's source is missing a digit. Nobody has corrected their earlier articles, which I'd think Sigma would have been frantically working towards had the figure been inaccurate by a factor of ten.
I'd still be interested in Sigma releasing a µ4/3 Foveon body and lenses, but they seem to have their hands full.
Cheers,
Rick

Oops! Sorry! It was 2:00 in the morning!
At least it's cheaper than $9,700 right?
Your 2 a.m. reason is good enough for me! I have a hard time buying a camera that cost more than my last (albeit used) car.

No worries Miguel. Hey, if everybody in Japan gets raptured but you, can you go grab a prototype to try out? (I don't understand how this is supposed to work.)

Cheers,
Rick
