I'm planning to get a SMD swift. I know a lot of people use folded/chopped pads ad backing for those. I am thinking of getting the NeoAir pad (small? Perhaps the 3 oz is worth getting the full pad? Let the UL gods strike me where I stand!), but how would that fit into the equation? Would that leave the back area open and I ought to get the alum stays to help support the pack INSTEAD of having a traditional foam pad?

Air pads with UL packs?

I actually find my Gorilla pack most comfortable without a frame and using an inflatable as back padding. I put it inside the pack folded against the back, and it's completely but not thoroughly deflated. Both the Exped Downmat 7 (full length) and a Thermarest Prolite 3/4 length pad worked well. I imagine the Neoair would work ok if you pack carefully and to avoid back pokes and pad punctures.
I've tried sleeping no pad, cheap blue foam pad, Ridgerest, Prolite, and Downmat, with only the Downmat and blue foam being full length. I toss and turn, and sleep on both back and stomach. For me, it's worth getting better sleep to have a full length pad. Based on descriptions of the Neoair feel and warmth and the Downmat's comfort, I've decided to get (it's on a Fedex truck for delivery as we speak) the Exped Synmat UL for 3 season use. It's 5 oz heavier than my Prolite 3/4 length, but one pound lighter than the Downmat.
I am using a SMD Swift with an air mattress. I also have a lengthy review up on the Sixmoons site about how it works for me. I have a down mat I have been using and an Exped UL7 that I plan on using with the Swift. I don't place either in the pad pocket as I have a piece of 3/8" foam cut to fit the pocket. If you have your pack properly packed, you can get 90% or more weight transfer to the hips and a very comfortable pack.
I also have the Swift 10 and I use a POE Ether Elite 6 air pad. Like John above I don't place the air pad in the pad pocket. I cut down a piece of my old Ridgerest to fit the pocket and it is very comfortable.
I have the Swift 11, and I use a Neoair with it. Inside of the pad slot I use two sections of a Z-rest pad.
It stifens the pack and I like the feel of the Z-rest on my back. It will probably add a bit of cooling when it gets warmer out.
The small piece of Z-rest is also a nice sit pad.
I'm using a neo-air regular length with a Gossamer murmur and I think the extra few ounces are worth it. I figure that I have to sleep for about 8 hours and for the first time, I feel like I am on a bed, not a floor with a pad under me. It fits well in the pad pocket or I can use the foam sit pad in the pocket and roll up the neo. (Only if I think there might be sharp thorns or something)
