anyone ever remove the cap and rubber "sheath" from their frontier pro?
the cap is rarely useful to me, just curious how much it weighs if anyone knows.
seems really difficult to peel the rubber attachment off the filter. wanted more info before i go and cut it all off…
May 11, 2011 at 7:22 pm #1735598Wait, which forum is this?
Yeah, you can just cut the rubber at where it leaves the body. No need to keep the cap on there. I suppose you could cut off all the rubber, but when the FP is sitting on your shoulder it doesn't really add any weight to your pack.
May 11, 2011 at 7:33 pm #1735602this is about modifying stuff, so i figured it could go in here.
what if the FP is attached to your hydration bladder in your pack?
(although recently it's certainly been on my shoulder strap as it's just easier to swap out that way)
heavier is heavier even if it's not in your pack…

How would you put it in your pack? Can you rip off the bite valve and attach tubing to the end?
>heavier is heavier even if it's not in your pack
Touche.

similar to the above. yep, you can pull off the bite valve and jam the hose in the hole. ahem.
i'm on portlandhikers as well, i mix them up at times too when the usernames or avatars cross over…

May 11, 2011 at 9:23 pm #1735645Exactly the same. It filters water quick. Really quick.
May 16, 2011 at 1:40 pm #1737307okay, i just went and did it. however, i left a shorter, intact ring of the rubber so i could get it back on, easily if i wanted.
i could have taken the whole thing off like a bike grip, but this was easier and i can still put it back on:
previous weight: 2.1 oz
new weight: 1.8oz
(my scale)meh on the weight, but it makes the whole thing smaller in my ditties bag.
it seems to stay tucked under the webbing on my shoulder strap just as well as before…
