so, i emailed golite to get some more info about their bag. they use 34 ounces of down in their long bag, which puts it on par with the western mountaineering lynx bag, which is rated to -10 degrees. however, golite only states that their bag has 7" of loft, where the western mountaineering bag has 8.5". i know that the western mountaineering bag's down is 850+ fill power, where the adrinaline is 800, so is that where the difference is?

which bag will be better? im leaning towards the Golite bag because i really like my 40 degree adrinaline and its center zipper, but im not sure.

Hi,

I recently had an opportunity to look over and use an Adrenaline 3-season bag. Very nice, lofted like crazy, the hood fit like a dream, it felt really good inside and the center zip is, as you suggest, an extremely nice feature. I especially like the waterproof Pertex head and foot zones – a brilliant idea. As a 3-season bag, I did find myself wishing the zipper was longer, as having the ability to zip down to say, the shin area, and use the bag as a quilt in the warmer months, would have gone a long way to increase the usefulness of this bag. For that reason alone, IMHO, I think it could be recommended only for extremely cold sleepers, those who also own summer bags, and/or only backpack during the extreme of the shoulder seasons.

In a 4-season 0 degree bag, I see no loss of functionality for having the reduced length zipper of the Adrenaline bag. The hood of the Golite is quite a bit nicer than WM bags (I have an Ultralite and love, love, love it, but the Golite hood is better), so I'd say you can order either without regret.

One thing: the WM Lynx is rated to -10 degree F, while the Golite 4-season is rated to 0 F and weighs about 4 ounces more. If money is no object, and you see yourself reaching down to below 0, then the obvious choice is the WM.

Oh… the reason the Adrenaline bag weighs more is due to the materials Golite uses. They have committed themselves to using recycled fabrics for "green" reasons, and the reality is, those fabrics weigh a bit more.

Both are really nice bags though.

I have no experience with WM bags, but I did pick up the Adrenaline 4-season bag (long) last year at the Golite Warehouse sale for $290+tax. The one negative that I do have is that it doesn't pack real small, in fact a quick look at the comparison chart tells me that it is the same stuff size (9×17) as my -25degF FF Peregrine.

However if you can find a good deal (like with the the 40% off coupon), then I would say that for the price you cannot beat it. It is completely functional for winter use and I love the front/chest zipper. I have taken it out on numerous winter climbs this season and the temperature rating appears to be spot on– I have been just fine in the low single digits with just a light baselayer top, bottom and socks on, so from my experience you could easily extend the rating of this bag to sub-zero temperatures.

While I am not sure if I would have paid full price ($500) for this bag, I am not too sure that the Lynx is worth an additional $105 either. I mean, if I was seriously considering dropping $600 then I would order the Arc Expedition quilt which is rated to 5 degrees but weighs just 36oz or less depending on the size needed or if I wanted a full mummy bag, then I would look no further than a FF Ibis in Epic for $570 or eVent for $635.

It really depends what you want to pay, but in all honesty you will probably be satisfied with any of these high quality down bags.
