I recently contacted John at Bear Paw Wilderness Designs to attach perimeter netting and a custom full zippered door to my MLD Supermid. I thought I would quickly post the pictures he took and offer my praise of BearPaw's work. There have been a few threads about his custom work, quick turnaround times and great service. I echo those feelings completely.

I originally was going to use an inner net for the Supermid, but didn't like how the use-able space of the mid decreased considerably with the inner net. I really just wanted bug protection, but to be able to still sleep with the front doors open to provide maximum ventilation, views, etc. John said he hadn't done a full front zippered door like this on a 'mid before, but after a series of emails he sounded confident that it would work. I know a lot of 'mid users out there might not like this permanent attachment to the mid, but I am more in line with the 'light weight' setups as opposed to 'ultra-light.' The netting added 10oz. to the weight of the Supermid, and since I will be using the Supermid only when sharing it (and splitting the weight of the 'mid), the weight penalty is merely 5oz. Total weight of the Supermid with guy lines and stuff sack is now 36oz.

Anyway here are the two pics John put up on his site under 'custom work.'

Very very nice.

I always disliked the bottom perimeter only approach as when the bugs are bad, it's generally warm and I don't want to close up the fabric door and roast. Looks like you solved that problem with the door. Well worth the weight in my opinion.

Where is the netting sewn to mid, along the bottom hem or higher up? Any sort of drip protection to prevent water wicking/dripping onto the mesh?

Thanks for sharing

Mark, 18" of netting sewn along the bottom hem. To be honest the Supermid is so huge that even if the perimeter netting got a bit wet it really wouldn't matter. Four people could sleep in there with gear (ok, that would be a bit tight), so using it for just two would leave lot of room between gear and wet netting. I will be using a Trailstar and Meteor bivy this summer, but this has made me heavily consider something like a Duomid with the same configuration.

Yup, good point and I agree. Nice setup.

By the sound of your other shelters, we have similar preferences.

Thanks for the answer

Very nice work. I am very tempted to do something similar, either with the Supermid or the trailstar. I want bug protection, but like you don't like the weight or size penalties of a full inner bug net.

Do you have any more photos?

If you don't mind, how much did this cost?
