I have been using a 2L MSR Hydomedary with a piece of fabric over the fill hole in addition to a Sawyer 3-Way Inline Filter for a passive water filtration system. Is there anything I could also be doing that doesn't use chemicals or batteries? Thanks

Brett,
I use a sawyer 0.1 micron filter too, but viruses can get through it so I add the CDC recommended 2 drops of unscented bleach per liter. You don't like chemicals and neither do I so I also inserted a Katadyn charcoal filter (REI) after the Sawyer to remove the chlorine bleach. What comes out is some of the sweetest water I've ever enjoyed. I don't use these filters inline. I filter into my pack's hydration bladder.
What kind or charcoal do they use, like aquarium stuff because that would be easier to replace than buying their small ones.
I'll be writing about this on my blog a little later this week, but it's a pretty neat little gizmo that is quite popular outside the United States and very effective.
The Katadyn charcoal looks like granules; about the size of espresso grind. I noticed similar material in water filters for coffee makers at Wal-Mart. Can't remember how the price compared though.

I don't know of anything else. Since the filter removes protozoa and bacteria, your question implies that you're concerned about viruses. Is that the case? My understanding is that viruses aren't generally a concern in the US in water away from populated areas.
Consider reviewing your vaccinations to make sure they're all current. Polio and hepatitis A come to mind. I read that around 40% of the US population has had hepatitis A and are now immune to it.
Is there a need to improve your water filtration? I've started doing less filtration and treatment myself (as in none) and focusing more on evaluating the water source.
