Hi,
I've been looking into making myself a pair of rain pants, but I'm not sure which fabric I should get. The two big outdoor fabric suppliers here seem to be

http://www.profabrics.co.uk
and
http://www.pennineoutdoor.co.uk/

For WPB fabrics in black, profabrics offers Skylon, which they say is similar to Pertex (not sure which kind). Pennine's WPB selection is even more vague–names like P42, P32, etc. I'm reluctant to order any of these without some advice first. I've heard Pertex soaks through pretty quickly as well.

Should I just go with something not breathable to be safe?
Are there any other fabric suppliers in the UK I should look at? (Or in Europe I suppose)

Thanks for your help.

Alex,
How much weight (grams per square meter) are you willing to carry. I did obtain one of the waterproof breathables from the UK, and it tested very waterproof by Roger Caffin; but it was on the heavy side. Please post your minimum acceptable weight, and if the above fabric meets it, I will dig up the details and post them.

I'm not exactly sure what my limit is. I'm going to be hiking in the Dolomites–last year it rained once, but we all wished we had brought rain pants. That being said, SUL is not essential–I'm looking for good performance as well.

I'm pretty new to MYOG so all these fabrics are somewhat overwhelming–not sure where to start.

Perhaps this is a good choice?

Anyone had experience with this fabric?

The material I mentioned was from Profabrics, and is 2.3 oz per sq. yd. Roger found that with the fabric face to the water, it stayed dry to 60 kPa, or around 6000mm HH, which is very water resistant, especially for a fabric represented as waterproof breathable. It is a light greenish blue with an odd pattern in the weave, and a white inner coat. If you want, I can look through my old bills, find the stock no. or other ID, and see if they still have it on their site. But that would take quite a bit of time.

Ha, I can't really tell if you are offering or not! Yes, I would appreciate it? If it's too much trouble, don't worry about it.
