Hi,

I was hoping for some input on selecting a water repellant spray for my recently purchased down sleeping bag – it has a polyester taffeta shell and I was hoping to make it a bit more water resistant just to be on the safe side. Has anybody had good experience with nikwax spray on? How about revivex? I noticed with the latter a tumble dry is required to set it, whereas the other does not. Trying to minimize toxic chemicals if possible. Input appreciated.

WM recommends ReviveX. I recently laundered my WM bag carefully (and with great trepidation) following the directions on the WM site linked to in James' post. I tested the DWR afterwards and it is better than when the bag was new.

Yes, you do need the dryer to set the DWR spray. In addition, fluffing the bag for a short time between trips not only dries out and fluffs up the down, but also resets the DWR finish a bit. Just be sure to use the lowest warm temperature, and check frequently to be sure you're not overheating (you don't want a melted shell!). On some dryers you may have to keep shifting between warm and air-only settings.
