I use a Diawa Minispin Combo. (reel and rod) It works very well if you are not concerned about its looks. It is also a great value @ $45. I think the rod and reel with line weigh about 8oz if I remember correctly.

I found a small and cheap (~$10) ice rod and reel at a local sporting goods store last year and have been using this. The rod weighs less than 1 oz and the reel is a little over 4oz with 4lb string. It's about 18 inches total length, so it takes a few minutes of getting used to compared to a regular sized rod.

Works really well for alpine lake trout and small streams. It's seen about 10 days out fishing so far and is still in good shape.

A few years ago, I picked up one of these telescopic rods and have been really happy with it. To look a it, it's kind of a cheap piece of cr*p, but it's light, very packable, and does a reasonable job. I even brought it to Alaska a few years ago for a diversion from fly fishing for salmon. I had intended to catch some Dolly Varden on a little spinner, but ended up getting a pink salmon on 4 lb test line. It may not be the cream of your fishing arsenal, and people might laugh at you for using it, but it will get the job done. Best of all, if it breaks or you lose it, it's only 20 bucks.

I use a Quantum XR 4.8oz w/line also have used a zebco UL4 classic at 5 oz Pflueger also makes a sub 5 oz reel that I saw at Dicks with a spare spool for $30. Last year I brought a Pflueger Trion at 8.9 oz spooled with 4 lb test and a extra spool w/ 8lb test. As my pack weight decreases my fishing gear weight increases

+1 on the Shakespeare Travelmates. They are lightweight and inexpensive and you can usually find them at Big 5 on half off sales (picked one up last year with reel for $15). I had one that lasted over several years and a lot of trout.

Another option is the Emmrod. http://www.emrod.com/index.cfm?page=products.cfm&cat=byModel&model=Packrod. Not the lightest thing, but if you ever worry about snapping a rod, these things are pretty robust.

I got my kit from Cabelas, but I know basspro shos sell them also. From when I was looking a different combos, the Diawa was a little smaller than the shakespear versions. It has so far served me well. I caught well over 100 trout with it last summer on one trip.

Good luck!

I also use the small collapsible shakespear rod and the Shakespear Synergy 200 reel. Both are very lightweight and small which is great for packing, and it makes it feel like a decent fight with the fish. I get a US postal tube and I keep 2 rods in it. They fit perfect and it keeps them very protected. With the right rigging you can fish flies, bait and lures on that set up.
