I'm looking for a suprise present for my girlfriend, and i would like to get her a rain jacket of some sort, either a lighter weight softshell or a hardshell. however, she is 6' tall, and i would like to get her something that will fit well and is long in the sleeves.

for the tall ladies out there, is there a good women-specific jacket that fits, or do you use men's jackets?

For my wife too, shopping for any clothing starts with sleeve length or inseam.

She's wearing a Marmot Precip jacket she likes now. It's hit & miss though – no one seems to make outdoor clothing for tall women.

For other tops, she's had luck looking for sleeves with thumbholes. Made longer, they work well for her. I told her she should maybe stock up.

Good luck.

So i got the idea that maybe if the sleeve length is good for me (6'1") it would probably work for her too. i tried on the patagonia torrentshell yesterday in a size small. i couldn't really zip it up well on me (i wear a large with room for layers in my eVent rain jacket), but the sleeves seemed long enough on me and it came in a nice blue. i think im going to try that. if she doesn't like it, maybe try the precip

"-no one seems to make outdoor clothing for LONG TORSO women"

There, I fixed it.

My wife is short, and when it comes to pants, there isn't a single outdoor company that makes pants short enough for her, and she's skinny so that isn't the problem. Almost every outdoor pants out there for women have long enough legs that I could wear them at 6', even if they are half my waist size…

As far as your question is concerned, since she is close to your size, try on one of her other jackets that fit her well, then take note of the difference in fit to you. (e.g. sleeves may only go to your wrist bone instead of your hand, chest might be roomier, or tighter, than you usually wear, body length too short or long for you, etc.) Then try on jackets at the store, men's and women's, to try to find one that fits similarly.

My Marmot Oracle rain jacket has a back length that is at least a couple of inches longer than customary. Really nice rain jacket for around town use. At one pound I tend to use a lighter alternative such as an ugly DriDucks for backpacking.

Cabela's sells a GTX PacLite parka for $99. and they come in Tall sizes for both men and women. I've had mine for 5 years and even with lots of use it still looks like new.

so, i decided that i think she could get more out of a softshell than a hardshell, and after reading a few reviews, i tried on a mens small patagonia simple guide. the sleeves were actually perfect for me (i normally wear a large) and the torso length was long enough, so i got it for her, hoping it would fit.

well, it fit her perfectly, in the sleeves, and in the torso length. and she couldn't have been happier, and neither could i… :)

now im looking at the new patagonia torrentshell pullover if i ever want to get her a hardshell. its on the less expensive side for rain jackets, weighs 10 ounces, and seems like a solid jacket.

any reviews for the torrentshell's performance in extended wet weather?
