I'm looking to purcase new line to replace my old stuff.
What is out there that can meet the following criteria:

1) highly visable, so I don't trip on it all the time.
2) glow in the dark?
3) good for knot tieing?
4) durable
5) light, but easy to handle
5) something that I can use for;
-bear bag
-clothes line
-guy line
-general purpose

What kind of thickness should I be looking for?

Thanks,
Doug

Flourescent Mason's Line – the braided stuff

A compromise on ability to tie knots

Mostly, it's cheap

Quite light

maybe 3/32" diameter

You probably want something more expensive though

I bought 50' of the 1.4 slick dyneema cord from Joe to use with my bear bag system, however, I have not had a chance to use it yet so I cannot comment on it. The only issue I feel I may have with it is how easy it will be to pull a heavy food bag up a tree using that small diameter cord. Some have pointed out that it can be havoc on the hands. I plan on grabbing a stick or something and wrapping the cord around it a couple of times to make a handle to pull by. But I dunno, I will see…I love the light weight though, and it is rated at around 330 pounds so it should be handy for a multitude of things if need be…

Lawson Kline sells some solid dyneema cord over on his site (Mountainfitters.com) It is a little thicker (2 or 2.25 mm…) and it has a urethane coating which makes it a little slick so it should glide over a limb pretty well. Cool thing about this cord is the breaking strength…975 pounds. 50' of this weighs just a little over 1 oz.

Lawson also has some slightly thicker/heavier cord that resembles the kelty triptease. It is rated to around 300 pounds, weighs about 1.4 oz for 50' and has a reflective glowire in it so it will be light up when light hits it in the dark.

This table has most of the choices out there:

If you are tying knots, my suggestion is to:
avoid anything smaller than 1.5 mm
get a line with a polyester or nylon sheath
probably avoid lines with reflective tracers

Mason's line is tough, light and affordable, but I wouldn't recommend it since it gets tangled up too easily, the kind i tried anyway (braided that i got on ebay)
