I've been using the Inov8 Roclite 320s for the past couple years but I just don't find them durable enough. The fabric on the uppers wears very quickly where the forefoot bends and the resulting holes allow dirt and stones in between the inner and outer. Is there an alternative shoe (non-Inov8 is fine) that has a more durable upper but a similar fit and responsiveness?

I've found La Sportivas to be very durable. I've only used the Fireblades, but they definitely last longer than anything else I've used.

I am using for the first time a pair of Oboz Firebrand. At 1kg for the pair they are on the heavy side and I would prefer a non-waterproof version but they have 350 miles on them and seem hardly worn. I expect at least 1,000 miles out of them.

I have some Asics trail runners that I've used first for general use, then mountain biking (with toe clips) and then wet-foot fly fishing. They've gone on for years now. Look like heck, but still work for biking/fishing.

… the only problem is that Asics is one of those that juggle their line constantly. I think I prefer my older wet-foot pair to my current dry-foot pair.

LaSportiva Crossleathers. The lugs will wear down to nothing before you get a hole in the upper (in my experience).

For most trail shoes, you're going to trash the midsole or outsole before you rip the upper. Other than some Lowa GTX low tops, I don't know of anyone who makes a trail shoe with a PU midsole.

Upper wise, I've had great luck with the Montrail Sabino. Has reinforcements made of leather, suede, TPU and/or pleather- perhaps that has made the difference? Uppers have done well, as have the outsole. Of course, the price you pay for a durable outsole is that it isn't nearly as grippy as some of the options.
