I just got my new pair of Bone Flats pants in the mail yesterday, and I thought I'd share my impressions. I needed to replace my BPL Thorofare pants which, after glissading too much last year in the Sierras, are in danger of vaporizing in a stiff wind. My size is still in at the BPL store, but I wanted to try RR's mesh ventilation system.

What I loved about the BPL Thorofare pants was the light weight (3.9 oz for my pair, size S), exceptionally quick drying time (mere minutes after fording a stream), and the minimal design. They did get a bit hot in direct sunlight, and ventilation was never quite as good as with shorts.

So far, the Bone Flats pants look good to me. They're more than twice the weight of the Thorofare pants (Size S, 30" inseam, weighed on my scale at 9.5 oz, which is 1 oz over spec). The mesh panels on the outside and inseam of each leg seem like they will be very nice for hot summer days. The fabric is very light, although clearly thicker than the BPL fabric. Design is pretty minimal, but there is added weight from a webbing belt, elastic and belt-looped waist, a zippered fly with a top button, and two zippered pockets (one butt pocket and one inside the right hand pocket).

The look of the RR pants is quite nice, although the BPL pants were sufficiently snazzy for town stops on the PCT. I'll certainly be treating the new pants a little more delicately since I'd like them to last longer. No glissading in these!

Just thought some folks might like to see the comparison. Anybody else try these out yet?

Thanks for the post.

I have always been a big fan of the Railrider shirts for hot sunny weather.

I believe the mesh on the pants is similar to the shirts. It is not a super fine mesh. mosquitoes, ticks, etc… can penetrate.
So won't be as bug-proof as the Thoroughfare pants, but should prove to be cooler, more ventilated and more durable.

Oh yeah. The mesh is definitely the same as on the shirts (I have an Adventure shirt as well… the fabric of the Bone Flats pants is much softer than the shirt, although this might be because the shirt has just stiffened like pack straps tend to do).

As for bugs, I also picked up my first spray bottle of Permethrin a few days ago. So hopefully the bug-proofing will not be an issue :)

Another similar venting pant would be the Exofficio Vent'r pant. The Railrider pant outer leg mesh will be vulnerable during bushwacking.

I've been thinking about picking up a pair of the RR pants. I too have a couple of their Eco-mesh shirts and absolutely love them.

The one item stopping me from getting the pants is the elestic waist. I'm not a fan of elastic waist. I find they make the pants more hot on hot days….if that makes any sense? I like pants that rest easily on my hips. I may buy a pair and see if I can open the waist and cut the elastic band. Thanks again……

Also consider the "Men's Eco-Mesh Pant". I don't think it has the elastic waste.
The mesh is convertible, at the cost of added weight

I have a pair of the eco-mesh pants. They only have the mesh on the out side, and weigh 2 oz more that the bone flats. You can zip up the side panels when it gets windy, which is very convenient when it gets cooler. Us desert hikers can see 50 degree or higher swings in temperature. Looks like the bone flats have inner and outer mesh, but are always open – no zipper? That would be a deal killer for me.

I really wanted to like the BPL thorofare pants, but they were much hotter than the eco-mesh. I find the pockets in the eco-mesh pants are nice a big and convenient for carrying stuff.

I ended up selling the BPL pants, and the eco-mesh are my go to pants on most 3 season hikes.

Nick, that's good to hear. The Bone Flats don't have the zipper to hide the mesh, but I tend to overheat no matter what when I'm wearing pants, so I'm happy that the RR pants will be less hot than the BPL pants.

As for the elastic waist, the pictures on the RR site show the same elastic on the Eco-mesh pants as the Bone Flats. It's just two small patches of elastic on the sides of the waist, not the whole way around.
