Anybody have any information on the Sandia Mountain Wilderness/Pecos Wilderness in New Mexico? I have a trip planned to South Dakota at the end of the month and the weather/snow are not cooperating. Looking for other options and they need to be within a few hours of an airport.

Thanks

Jack,

Thanks

We thought about it but logistics didn't work out as well. A few need to be out for early flights on Sunday. Albuquerque is close to both of these options.

The Pecos (Santa Fe) still had a bunch of snow a few weeks back and even neighboring Ski Santa Fe had 100% of their ski runs operating at that time.

The Sandias (Albuquerque) had some high lingering snow but most of the mountain looked dry from the city a couple days ago. Backpacking was allowed a few years back but leaving a vehicle at any of the typical trailheads (east or west), required coordination with the Forest Service and/or Albuquerque's "Open Space" office ->Police Dept so they know you left a vehicle overnight intentionally.

Might be able to patch some public transport and urban hoofing to the western trailheads to avoid the whole rental thing.
