If you want to stay in Seattle , the TTs are made there.
(your tent is probably made in Taiwan)

Henry does make his own tents but not the ones he sells.Apr 11, 2011 at 6:18 pm #1723382Ross

Actually, my tent is a TarpTent. I'm surprised they are made in Seattle. I thought Henry lived somewhere else (California?).I'm just not sure about MSR. They are part of Cascade Designs and a few of those companies make their goods in Seattle (Thermarest and Platypus) and I think the stoves are made locally, but for some reason I agree with you and think they make the tents overseas.
Apr 11, 2011 at 6:47 pm #1723395I love this thread idea. Personally have tried to purchase as much US made cottage gear I can. The hardest to find US made are shoes, certain clothing items and then all the misc stuff. Shoes being my biggest concern (I'm sure I could find or make my own clothes if I committed the time).
BTW DeFeet socks are made in the US too.
Apr 11, 2011 at 7:39 pm #1723419"What we need to see is PAN American products made in this hemisphere to strengthen our North and South American economies. Colombia (the country, not the clothing manufacturer) now makes a lot of clothing but most of it is designer stuff. They COULD make outdoor clothing if the U.S. companies like REI would channel their contracts that way."
I work part time at an REI. A month or so ago we had a visit from the REI clothing design team from Seattle. One of the things they were telling us is that REI is trying to shift their manufacturing to the western hemisphere. They said part of the problem is that so much manufacturing has settled in Asia that it is harder to find facilities that can do the job closer to home. But they have some items coming from Central America now, and are working on developing some in Mexico. They didn't say anything about Columbia.
Apr 11, 2011 at 11:00 pm #1723466Stephans right about the Chacos…they use to be made in CO, but a couple years back they went off shore as well. Sadly the quality went down a bit. They dropped the vibram sole on many models, and put in an inferior one. O wells, it happens. The worse I've seen is Sorel…the current China made boots are absolute garbage in comparison to the old school ones. When I got mine, I made it a point to scour ebay to buy a used pair that were still Canadian made.

Apr 12, 2011 at 5:52 am #1723527Maybe a member should/could create a USA Gear spread sheet for reference. One that can be edited to update.

Apr 12, 2011 at 11:09 pm #1723899Great thread! Couple of notes:
1) Pots…..there is really only one pot manufacturer in the continental US that does a decent backpacking pot (that I'm aware of) and it is Open Country…..They make the Open Country line of aluminum pots which are also the same as the AGG pots.
2) MSR……pretty sure you're going to find that the important bits in the MSR stoves are made in Korea…..pretty sure….not 100%…..but in the 90s

Apr 14, 2011 at 3:27 pm #1724637Is this a materials or labor only thing and should this be exclusive to companies that only make all their gear in the USA using only domestic materials?
Of the Asian countries which country of origin would you rather see on the label.. China, Taiwan, or Korea?
Apr 14, 2011 at 3:33 pm #1724641bird-lizard gear made for u.s. military consumption is made under license by propper international in the usa. while lots of folks think canada is part of the usa, it is not.
don't forget cilogear for packs.
Apr 14, 2011 at 4:10 pm #1724652Canada is American, but not U.S.A.
–B.G.–
Apr 14, 2011 at 4:23 pm #1724657true – canada is north america, but not the usa. what's your point. my comment was that it's my understanding that the u.s. military doesn't consider canadian made to be usa made and that kit supplied by them to the military is actually manufactured under license by propper international.
Mar 25, 2013 at 11:46 pm #1969633This is an old thread, but I have to give a shout out for Northern Lites snowshoes, made in Wisconsin.
