Hum … You might be either hot, or cold. Not my choice for enjoyment.

I think they have a way to go, judging by this from their web site:
‘SSL: Super Seriously Light – made in Pertex ‘Blue’ parachute fabric weighing 46gsm’
That weight is hardly ‘Super Seriously Light’.

That’s an amazingly light bag, if their 360g (12.7 oz) weight is actually correct. My mom has a Western Mountaineering Tamarak half-bag that weighs 19.1 ounces. (I used it as an ‘elephant foot’ bag; for her, it’s full-length.)

Roger, you say “not my choice for enjoyment”. Congratulations, that says (to me) that you are a normal person rather than the masochistic type who would enter a mountain marathon of two successive days in Britain’s October weather. “OMM” is the new name for “KIMM”(Karrimor International Mountain Marathon”.

If you look at OMM’s “home” and “about OMM” pages you will see:- “The Original Mountain Marathon is an annual test of navigation skills and fitness. Each October over 3,000 entrants compete in the greatest outdoor challenge in the UK. The formula remains a challenging 2-day Mountain event (the Elite course being 2 sequential marathon lengths) where a team of two navigate their way around a 2-day course, in mountainous terrain, in a new location each year, carrying all food stove tent and equipment for an overnight camp. The Original Mountain Marathon – OMM reflects the fact that the event has been going on since 1968 and many see the event as the fore-runner of all adventure racing. The name “KIMM” reflected Karrimor’s sponsorship. Karrimor are no longer the lead sponsor……. In fact, our innovation director is Mike Parsons who until 1996 was owner, driver & innovator behind Karrimorâ„¢ where he was responsible for creating some of the industry’s most iconic products: the Whillans and Haston Alpiniste, the Karrimat, the Jaguar SA pack, KSB’s, the KSB lightweight boot and not to forget the KIMM AR35.”

The reference to Pertex Blue parachute fabric occurs in a section about their future plans, and I think the weight of 46gsm quoted is either a mistake or possibly based on weighing one sample which happened to be overweight. 46 gsm = 1.62 oz.sq.yd. but my own Pertex blue weighs 1.4 oz/sq.yd (39.69gsm), which is in line with the spec Pertex gave me. For comparison, sylnylon’s 1.3 oz/sq.yd, =36.85 gsm. Not “super seriously light” by Bill Fornshell’s standards, but then not much commercially available gear is. This may be academic anyway – when will Pertex products be available again, and which ones?

Personally, I’m not going for any of OMM’s existing products, but I think it’s worth keeping an eye on them for the future.
