I'm thinking about getting one of these for long dayhikes, and possibly an overnight. Does anyone have feedback on this pack? Is the top pocket removable? Thanks!

I have a talon 44 and the top pocket is removable so I think it would also be on the 33 it's a pretty awsome pack comfortable durable well made overall good pack
The top (brain) on the 33 is not removable on my few year old version, and doesn't look like it based on the pictures of this year's version either. The non-removable/extendable top is my only gripe, since if the main body is full you lose all volume in the lid. I've toyed with the idea at modifying it myself, maybe once I have more MYOG experience…
It's a sweet pack though. Extremely versatile for all seasons and pursuits, and comfortable in the heat with the airspace system. TONS of features for the weight.
The top pocket isn't removable.
I've had the Talon 33 for about a year now and it was big enough for a 3 day backpacking trip with a 25lb pack weight and lows in the low 30s, including a Scarp 2 tent and a Snow Peak Trek 1400 cook setup – neither of which are exactly small. I also use it a lot for anywhere from afterwork hikes to long summit days (16mi, 6500' gain, two 14,000' peaks, class 4), and it works great. It's held up well to free-soloing low class 5 pretty well. No damage to the pack to speak of. I also use it in the Utah desert, so it deals with heat well. Sure, it weighs more than other options, but it's well built and very comfortable, allowing you perfectly dial in your torso height with the velcro height adjuster system.
My favorite part: it clings to your body well for technical efforts and it carries 25lbs very comfortably.
I plan to continue using it extensively this year, extending its use into 4 and maybe even 5 day trips by using a smaller one-person tent and cook system, or getting my girlfriend to carry the cookset while I carry the tent. I also want to try some mountain bikepacking with it.
I'm glad to hear it's a good pack. I have a 22 and an 11 (yes, I'm a gear freak!), and I need something bigger for longer excursions. Too bad about the lid, though. I guess there's a difference between "floating" and removable?
