I’m buying some powerstretch fleece for beanies and Mill Direct Textiles seems to have some of the best prices for cut yardage, but the black is almost 3x more expensive than any other color with the same finish. Any ideas why?

If you’ll forgive the noob question what is the difference between the poly-nylon and jersey face? Under what circumstances would you want one over the other?

Ah yeah, that's the one that got paid $32,000 for a speaking engagement at a university. Insane waste of money.

That IS pretty sad.

For your question, do you think maybe black is more expensive due to the inherent 'popularity' of black clothing in the outdoor industry.

No idea. Could be that the other colors are remnants and roll-ends, overstocks, etc. and therefore at a discount from the full-price black. Is carbon-black involved in making fleece? It is used in most every plastic, paint. I think I remember reading that Japan was the world's largest manufacturer of carbon black and the production capacity was shot due to the earthquake.

Based on talking to staff at Mill Direct last year the nylon blend face is more durable and less likely to snag.

Regarding pricing- they buy remnants, seconds, and overstock from Polartec. These are available at good prices but limited supply.

Then there are colors/fabrics that they order from Polartec's current production. "These All-Time Favorites fabrics are our most popular colors. We intend to keep these in-stock today, tomorrow and next month. If you need to rely on a consistent assortment of fabrics, you will want to choose an All-Time Favorite fabric."

They pay full wholesale for these, you pay close to retail. That's why I have a greyish "sharkskin" color Powerstretch bolt that cost $6/yd last year vs. $20 for black.

Makes perfect sense, Jim. Thanks!
