Why haven’t I heard anything about the Outdoor Research Ion on this site. Back in some Outdoor Retailer dispatch a year or so ago Alan Dixon said this might be one of the best around but it doesn’t seem like anyone’s mentioned it since. Does anyone have one and can give a comparison as to how it stacks up against the usual favorites? Thanks so much :)

I’ve got a OR Ion. It’s the first and only wind shirt I’ve used, so I can’t compare it to anything. I’m pretty pleased with it, though. I’ve got an XL, and at 108g/3.75oz with a hood it’s about as light as you’ll see for a larger size.

The Ion’s fabric is great: extremely breathable yet wind proof and with a good enough DWR to handle a light drizzle. I’ve dealt with pertex quantum (on my sleeping bag) and think that it would be a slightly better material for a windshirt. Quantum seems just as breathable but with slightly more water resistance.

The fit of the OR Ion is perfect for me. I would call it an “athletic” fit if you get your regular size but it’s more relaxed if you size up like I did. I seem to remember Alan raving about how well the hood fit, and I agree wholeheartedly. When you cinch down the hood adjustments it’s not going anywhere regardless of how the wind howls. Also, the slightly stiffened brim really helps keep drips of water off my glasses.

Hope this helps. If you’ve got any specific questions just say the word and I’ll try to give some insight.

Can anyone compare/contrast the OR Ion to the Marmot Ion? Which would you own if you had only one?

I do not own the OR Ion, but the Marmot Ion is made of Pertex Quantum. It was the deciding factor in the toss up between the two jackets for me as the Pertex is quite breathable. The Marmot jacket is on clearance at Campmor for $55, but sizing and colors are limted.

to make the decision harder the outdoor research ion, is at sierratradingpost.com for $50. my only question is, the OR ion has 15Dx40D fabric. does anyone know which areas are reinfoced with 40 Denier fabric? thanks!
