Like your first test its not the tie out itself but the dissipation of the tie out forces into the parent fabric. Thoughts I had:
splay the grosgrain into a V rather than a straight loop, before you stitch, to spread the load. Maybe even a wide enough V wide enough to include in the edge stitching.
Add a larger patch of the thinner cuben in a quadrant shape as well as, or instead of the triangular patch.
