Chlorine dioxide decreases iron?

I have traditionally used the old backpacker standby for water purification in the backcountry…iodine tablets. AKA “Potable aqua.” They always worked for me…never got sick. When I’m on the trail, humping it and thirsty as hell, the iodine tasting water never bothered me.

Now this chlorine dioxide water purification thing has come out. And at first I was really excited about it, as the stuff reportedly kills EVERYTHING and the water taste isnt as bad as iodine.

So that part about chlorine dioxide is a good thing…

But then I read that chlorine dioxide oxidizes iron and nickel. That concerned me. I did some googling and came across some EPA websites that indicated chlorine dioxide makes a fantastic water purification treatment, but it oxidizes iron. I asked a pharmacist about this and he told me that this could potentially cause anemia.

I was recently diagnosed with iron deficiency, without anemia. My blood work is OK, but my ferritin levels and other iron tests are a little low. I take iron supplements. My pharmacist told me to maybe consider going back to potable aqua.

I just wanted to point this out to the surfers here, if anyone has any knowledge on the relationship of chlorine dioxide as a water treatment chemical and its effects on iron in the body, Id be interested in hearing what you have to say.

Another reason I am bringing this up is my doctor told me that iron deficiency is uncommon in men and that my iron deficiency was probably caused by too much fast packing, too much mileage. He said its called “march hemoglobinuria” and its caused by repetitive footstrike during long forced marches (fastpacking in rugged mountain terrain) or doing a lot of marathons.

He said the military first realized that long foot marches could cause iron deficiency in men. The constant loadbearing and footstrike busts small capillaries in the feet and lower limbs, leading to iron deficiency and possibly anemia.

I am just wondering if this common combination of heavy mileage combined with a trail diet low in red meat and fresh green veggies, combined with regular use of chlorine dioxide water purification treatment is a recipe for iron deficiency in the male, ultra-light backpacker?

Regarding oxidizing Fe: just “thinking out loud” here, but i would have thought that the vast majority of any oxidative effects would have ceased after reacting properly measured amounts of AquaMira Parts A & B and then waiting until the necessary contact time for elimination of Crypto (~4hrs) before drinking. Did you happen to mention that 4hr wait time to your pharmacist? Curious to know his/her response. The way i figure it, if AqM is still highly oxidative, after 4hrs, then oxidation of Fe is only one of your worries. Oxidation of cellular membranes from buccal to butt (or stem to stern, oral to anal, cheeks to cheeks, lips to lumen, or tongue to tokhes, i.e., mouth to you know where [note: BTW, tokhes is Yiddish for derriere, which is French for, well…y’all know what it’s French for) would also be a concern. That being the case, i’m just a tad skeptical about any severe effects (very minor effects, perhaps), but would be definitely be interesting in learning more. Also, i’m wondering what “problems” Thru-Hikers who use AqM regularly have experienced. You’d think that there would be a ton of anecdotal knowledge amongst Thru-Hikers “to stay away from AqM” by this point in time. Finally, there is so much tissue and fluids for any AqM, still able to oxidize after 4hrs, to react with that i would be very surprised that much remains to absorbed into the blood stream by the time it gets to the small intestines and so have an oxidative effect on Fe in the red blood cells. Even though Fe readily oxidizes, wouldn’t the ClO2 have to react with the red corpuscle’s cell membrane and work its way down to the porphyrin ring of the hemoglobin molecule in whose center is an atom of Fe? I guess just destroying the RBC’s membrane would be sufficient to disable it. Now, these are just my semi-educated guesses and maybe i’m missing the whole point. Certainly, with a known health problem, it could be advisable to talk to your Dr. also.

Anyways, my two shekels.

Mount Mashington,NH this morning.

But, if you spent a few days in South Texas in the summer all the Cuben in Cuba would not help you get cooler.

Well the thing is, if chlorine dioxide after a four hour wait, has even slight oxidative effects on iron, it would be a bad thing for anyone prone to iron deficiency to use. Also, how many backpackers REALLY wait the full 4 hours after they use chlorine dioxide? I bet not many wait the full 4 hours…I know I havent waited the full 4 hours in the past all the time.

Chlorine dioxide kills most stuff within 15 to 30 minutes. I would never use water treated with chlorine dioxide in under the 30 minute guideline I have personally set for myself.

By contrast, with potable aqua (iodine), you dont have to wait 4 hours for the full effects to kick in. About 45 minutes is the maximum time Ive ever seen advertised for iodine.

And then factor in the fact that a person already dxed with iron deficiency is probably taking iron pills and washing it down WITH chlorine dioxide treated water!

I guess if you do wait the FULL 4 hours EVERY time you use chlorine dioxide in any form for water treatment, oxidative effects on iron would be minimized. But as I emphasized above, how many backpackers (especially fastpacker types) really wait the full 4 hours?

Seems to me that chlorine dioxide is oxidizing many of those helpful minerals present in natural water sources such as mountain streams, springs, etc. The fact that chlorine dioxide kills everything biological in dirty water is great…the fact it oxidizes minerals in water taken from a clear mountain stream or spring is not such a great thing.
