Is anyone making a lightweight, breathable mid trail boot these days? Something like the Montrail Sabino Trail Mid GTX or Inov-8 Roclite 400 GTX but without Gore-Tex. Lots of mesh, and no WPB.

I've not found much, and I'm hoping I'm just missing something. There's the Keen Voyageur, but it doesn't fit me well. Inov-8 used to make the Roclite 370.

I've got 10.5/11 and wide feet, 2E and 4E usually work, depending on the brand. The need for width generally excludes Inov-8, unfortunately.

Before someone asks why:

I've had a hard time finding new shoes for this spring. I'm very much used to Chaco sandals, but I'd like an actual shoe. One of the biggest problems I've run into is that the back of the shoe rubs against my ankle. And it gets a lot worse when I replace the stock insoles with a pair of Superfeet. In addition to having wide feet, I also seem to have ankles that are hard to fit or anatomically anomalous. Almost every pair of trail runners I've tried over the last few months has rubbed the back of my ankles with each step. Haven't worn any to the point of bleeding, raw ankles but it seems inevitable. The one exception so far is the Montrail Sabino Trail Mid GTX. It seems to be more forgiving ankle-wise, if only because it goes up past them.

I'm getting desperate for ideas- spring is almost here and I still haven't found a bloody pair of shoes that works! Thanks in advance!

Merrell Moab Mid comes in a non-gore-tex model and also a wide size, relatively light (for a mid), breathes well and found them to be very comfy

Aaron – I also have a wide foot and find that narrows (pardon the pun) the selection of shoes I can buy quite drastically. Try Zappos.com and select hiking shoes or trail runners, you then have the option to "narrow your search" and put in "wide." It's a good quick way to get an idea of a large selection of shoes you might like that are made in Wide. I get frustrated when I'm in the store and I find a pair of shoes I get excited about only to find that they are not made in Wide.

@Mike
Ah, totally forgot about the Moab Mid! I'll have to give it a whack. I've generally steered around Merrell after having gone through a few shoddy pair of Moabs in the mid 2000s.

@Hal

I did actually check Zappos, but it was all full leather, heavy, and/or Gore-Tex.

Searched for "trail," which seems to catch all/most of the hiking and trail running shoes and boots. From there, I filter by width and have checked W, WW, E, 2E, 3E, and 4E.

10.5 and 4E seems to be a bad combo, at least with what's in stock at Zappos. Even with the low top stuff, most 10.5 wide seems to be sold out! I don't filter for shoe length when looking around at Zappos, just in case it filters out something that might work if they had the size in stock.

Am bumping this 3-YO thread in slim hope that, despite my search yielding the contrary, some new source of non-WPB mid-boots is emergent.

I have Merrell Moab Ventilators, which fit wonderfully, but have too little rock plate protection. They are also on the sloppy side for sideways-support when I go steeply angled off trail (which is my next big trip). Don't care for Keens.

I want mids; I don't want "waterproof"; I see ~no selection of that. Missed any? TIA

Thanks, spelT!

Had found the five tens, but this is a number of choices. Lowa and Danner Extroverts most intriguing.
