REI TiWare Spoon = BPL long handled spoon?

As usual, REI has great products at great prices; and because of their return policy they end up getting a large % of my take home pay. But at least my spoon says “backpacking light”! I buy many items from BPL when I cant find the exact same thing at REI.

I have held the REI spoon in the store and I say it is the same weight as the first BMW Ti Spoon.

I always wanted to, but never had the guts… has anyone ever brought a scale to the store to weigh items?

Ok. Assuming your highly calibrated arm was able to differentiate the difference between the REI Ti LH Spoon and the BPL Ti LH Spoon. My wallet can differentiate the difference between the REI Ti Spoon $8.95 (Don’t forget the yearend dividend ) and BPL Ti Spoon Non-Member $15.99 Member $14.39.

I agree with you on the price difference.

My Home Made Ti Long Handle spoon weighs 0.23oz.

When I found the Ti spoon in the REI Atlanta Store a few weeks ago I went out to my Truck and got my spoon. I showed the clerk waiting on me where their spoon came from. That is when I held both and we both agreed my home made version was much lighter.

I am sure a lot of the price difference is from the large number of spoons REI bought.

The BPL Ti spoon (the original, heavy, bomber version) weighs 17g on my scale. The REI one on the same scale weighs 16g. Visually, they’re identical, except for the logo on the handle. The 1g difference is probably normal manufacturing variation.

These were discounted in-store at my local REI recently, alhtough they don’t seem to be discontinued… Maybe REI is switching to the lighter version?

Thanks for posting the weight of both Ti Spoons – Old BMW and new same REI spoon.

I expect BMW has sales rights “alone” for the lighter Ti spoon for a few years.

I think that was the case for the first Ti spoon BMW offered. Time ran out and then it looks like REI picked it up.

I am thinking of making a limited (numbered) edition of a couple hundred of my SULighter Long Handled TI Spoon. Cost $1,000 each in a Cuben Stuff Sack sewn with GOLD colored thread. Pre-production orders taken with delivery in 2010. Cash only.

I stopped by the REI in town, and they have the new titanium long handled spoon which looks exacty like the new SUL BMW spoon (which I own) except for the fact that the REI spoon is polished. Both spoons look like they had the same Mom and Dad…..

Hi all,

The REI LH spoon is the same as the BPL LH spoon. REI obviously buys in way bigger quantities than us, hence the price difference. We’ve dropped the member’s price on our version. After all, the design came out of the great mind of one of our members (Bill Fornshell) and members shouldn’t be priced out of this product. (We have no $ interest in the REI spoon.)

The SUL version of the BPL ti spoon is lighter than the REI or standard BPL ti spoon, it’s made of a metal that is quite a bit thinner, so it won’t have the durability demanded by most of the mainstream outdoor market.

The REI spoon and BPL spoon are the same weight (16-17g) and are polished, the SUL BPL spoon is around 11g and has a smooth matte finish.

Bill… I love your spoon… but I find the bowl a little small. Just a comment. Doesn’t stop me from using it… and loving it. But when I got the spoon a few months ago… I was really surprised when I saw (in person) how small the bowl is. It’s more teaspoon sized than soup spoon / table spoon sized.

I have to say I’m pretty happy with my Fornshell limited edition spoon, number 198 of 200, and recommend anybody interested act fast. Once they’re gone, they’re gone!

Sure, you can get the same spoon at REI for $800, (plus you’ll get $80 worth of divident back too), but the extra $200 is worth it for the signed and numbered version. The REI version also doesn’t include the cuben stuffsack, they’ve gone with cheap silnylon.

Are the BPL versions going to be swivelly like the TAD Gear or flippy like the Brunton?

Edit – Collapsible is cool because it will fit in my SP600 better. Oy! I just remembered one of the other BPL emails I got… will the BPL collapsible utensils be lauched with the other Ti goodies the email mentioned?

TAD Gear did, at one time, have the weight posted somewhere… I can’t find it now… I seem to remember that it was marginally comparable in weight to the SP Spork… not heavy, but then again, there’s a lot of lighter sporks out there…

I mostly want one because of the “cool” factor… I don’t know anyone else who has one… ;)

They’ll be “flippy” :) I looked at the “twisty” ones and the hinge seemed to wear out and get really loose with repeated use. The flippy ones are spring loaded, and don’t suffer from the same affliction.

Weight is about 16.5g, and we’ll have both spoons and sporks.

Ryan, will yours be the same as on the link, or flip the other way to prevent the little suprise parcels of hot soup in you crotch?

Brunton My-Ti Folding Titanium Spork 17 g

Ryan, could a collapsible spork, spoon etc be made that was lighter? Two pieces that snap together in such a way that gravity helps keep em together when loaded. Or doesn’t that idea offer any advantages?

Also what’s the fascination with Titanium? Lexan is lighter, cheaper and doesn’t scratch your pots.

Why not make a two piece Lexan Spork???

You could even have separate spoon & fork heads if you wanted or a modular break up handle ie one piece for a normal length, two pieces for a long handle.
