The return also reflects faithfully the pre-hydration days. I realize adding an internal hydration sleeve would make a mockery of "retro", but wish they could add two side pockets for water bottles. But then, yeah, purists would howl…

It is a Kelty after all, I'm going to send it to Dan and have him put some stays on this baby, should make my 20lb ultralight loads carry like a dream.

Me too, Michael — for the same price as the Klettersack. Then I'll off load that 'retro baby' at Ebay. :)

Retro nostalgia aside…

Interesting how MEC’s spec makes no mention of weight. Guess back in those retro days of canvas tents and such, people neither quibbled nor cared about pack weights?

In any case, for the same 20L capacity — but with internal bladder sleeve and external elastic mesh pockets — and very possibly even lighter weight — I would go with the MontBell Versalite 20 — well worth the higher price IMHO. But of course, no nostalgia here.

mec has some hella cheap climbing packs …. im talking about durable packs from ~$20-$90 … most arent very light … but then with the 500+ denier fabric and the hauling yr gonna do … would you want a cuben pack for that?

My favorite Klettersack is the Jandd Tozi Klettersack it's 37 liters weighs only 27.2oz made out of 500d cordura,3/8" foam back . This is my everyday go grocery pack it tuff and you can throw it around I have been using the pack for 2 years now. The add on side pockets, water bottle pocket, hip belt pocket are also great.
