Two thumbs up!
John is a great guy to deal with…
I ordered a Cub Den 2 and a custom inner net tent for it…

Ditto! Great to work with. Fast delivery. Great products.
I have a PyraNet 1 and 2. I've slept in the PyraNet one about 30 nights and the PyraNet two 7 nights.
Love both of them and would buy them again if I needed to.
The company was very prompt at answering my questions.
Rick
Great communication and delivery times. Nice product, although I found quite a few stray stitching lines on my modified hexamid inner. It was a custom piece though, so maybe this isn't the case for stock items.
In case you weren't sold by the previous comments here is another +1 for Bear Paw. I have a PyraNet2 for my Duomid. Great quality, great price.
I haven't seen a bad comment yet.
I own a one of their products myself.
John made me a custom inner for my Shangri La 3 which he has photos of on his website under "custom work". It's the mostly solid ripstop with a mesh door. He is great to work with and lightning fast with the build and ship.
BearPaw is what I consider one of the cottage industries best kept secrets. The product is great, delivery is fast, and above all they have always been open to custom work. Customer service has been top notch.
I call it a secret because until recently, you didn't read much about this manufacture. Truth be told, the only reason I stumbled across them was an eBay auction over a year ago.
+1 for me too. Own a minimalist and love it. Well made. the price was good and the product was shipped pretty quickly
+1 to everything said. John's been great!
I'd also add a big thumbs up! Communication, value, and work is all great. I have a Pyra Tent and a Pyra Net 1.
I have Minimalist 1 Bivy and I am very happy with it.
Here is an interview with John from Bear Paw done by the excellent Hiking in Finland blog: John from Bear Paw Tents.
I ordered a pyranet 1 in a custom gray color this afternoon. I just got an email from him saying that it will ship tomorrow. Now that is fast!

Roberto – Thanks for that review. I missed it when you posted it. I see that you have the tent set up so that the edges are close to the ground, which is the same way it is set up in the pictures on the Bear Paw web site. I e-mailed John about that, because I was concerned about adequate ventilation, and John said you can raise the tent off the ground more just be increasing the length of your poles. That makes sense to me – in the abstract. Does that sound doable to you, or do you see any issues with doing that?
Richard
Thanks for the responses. Bear Paw seems to fit my needs and all this positive feed back is encouraging.
Thanks all!!
@Richard
I could not find your email to let you know I posted that review. Sorry.
I actually had it set up a little higher than that but the others at camp connived my wife that she would be cold with the expected high winds so I lowered it. From what I saw it is doable. Very doable. It was really windy that night and very cold and I had no problems with condensation. The beak was set up high enough that it allowed good ventilation I think.
I have an inner tent custom made for the cub den. I really hope I can test it this weekend. I'll probably post something on this thread.
I was looking at their cuben PyraTent w/vestibule with a PyraNet2 underneath. It would be 28oz, and $360, if my math is correct.
Compare that to another cuben tent, say, the Zpacks Hexamid twin. That would be 18.3oz (including tyvek ground sheet) for $411.
How do they compare?
Konrad, what are you using that Pyranet under?
BTW, your avatar makes me laugh! (because you have a gigantic goofy grin on your face which is buried in a huge amount of down-filled puffy stuff)
I'll be using it under a duomid. I recently downgraded from a duo inner to a pyranet 1 as the duomid is now my solo shelter. My girlfriend and I tried to make the duomid work as our goto shelter but our Tarptent DR was just way more livable and convenient.
Ah, the avatar and the goofy grin…yeah that's my "It's really cold right now, but somehow I'm still diggin' it" look.
Take care!
Konrad,
I hear you regarding the DR. My fiancee and I originally used a DR, and then I started trying out a Trailstar. We used it on a week long trip to Glacier with a PyraNet 2 underneath. While it worked, she really liked the DR better for two, which was hard to argue with. The DR is just a Damn good shelter for two people!
But now when I go solo, I use the Trailstar and a SMD Serenity Net.
I think if I lived anywhere near the east coast, us four would have a good time!
I'm very close to buying the Minimalist 1 to use for the rare times I can't use my hammock, but in light of the lengthy discussion in the other thread regarding cuben, two questions come to mind.
First, from what I've read in the aforementioned thread, one of cuben's downsides is its low abrasion factor, so I figure that with either the .51 or .74, a ground cloth is necessary. I know that Zpacks uses 1.26 for the floor of the hexanet, and doesn't recommend one. Do those of you that have cuben floors use a ground cloth? What material are you using?
Second, has anyone had issues with leaking floors? This question was brought up by several folks, that like me are getting ready to buy gear with cuben floors, but didn't seem to get answered in the thread.
I like the idea of cuben flooring in that from what I've been told it's not slick like spinn or sil, and of course the weight factor.
Thanks for your comments,
Leigh
Anyone know how Bear Paws assembles it cuben tent? Is it stitched or bonded? If it's bonded, how is it bonded?
Can anyone comment on any cuben products from their shop? I'm thinking of getting the PyraTent in cuben but it would be nice to get some feedback from someone who's seen their work with cuben.
I don't own anything of John's yet, but I do have a Pentanet on order from him to make my Trailstar wife-compatible. He was overly helpful and quick to respond, and even talked me out of buying additional features on the inner as he said I wouldn't need them.
Talking me into not giving him additional money really shows how great of a guy and resource to the community he is.
