I'm in the market for some convertible hiking pants(bottom part of legs zip off to make shorts).

These would be used for spring to fall so I'm not looking for warmth. Just the obvious qualifications. Light, comfortable, fast trying, trusty construction, bug/sun repellent is fine but no big deal, and I don't want to look like Lieutenant Dangle when the bottoms are zipped off;-> In other words, not 1980's super short shorts.

I've got a 35 waist and 34 inseam. So standard sizes tend to not work.

I've been eyeballing exofficio and they do carry a long in certain styles but a bit hard to get(even on their website). Pricey at that.

I'm not against exofficio but I'd like to hear other suggestions.

I am also in the market for a lightweight, fast drying pair of convertible pants that don't leave you with daisy dukes when you zip the legs off. Do they exist??

I've got some Columbia lightweight ones that I pretty much wear 4 season. They are 100% nylon shell with a 100% poly mesh lining for the inside pocket material. Cargo style so longer when the legs are unzipped. I think I got them for about $40 on sale at Dick's. I like the dark gray, but they have other colors. 9.9 ounces on my scale and I didn't really need any underlayer while hiking in winter. My buddy has the same pair and he was amazed how quickly they dried after dunking his leg accidentally in a stream while filling water bottles. HTH

I just ordered a pair of Mountain Hardwear Mesa convertables. They seem to get good reviews. A big selling point for me was that in shorts mode they have a 11 inch inseam, thats about the longest inseam lenght I could find. When in pants mode, mine have a 32 inch inseam, I am not sure if they come in longer lenghts.

I know REI isn't for everyone here on BPL, but I have to say that their Endeavor convertible pant material is really great. I know that they also have a 34" inseam and the waist has elastic in it. Not sure how much they way, but I just love the material :)

Cheers

I have a pair of the Mesa's and the shorts seem longer than other convertible pants I've owned and they are one my favorites for backpacking now. I wear a pants size 32/34 and find the medium long a good fit for me. My only gripe is that the built-in belt can cause problems but that tends to go for all such contraptions.

My shorts weigh in at 10.1 ounces with an extra 4.4 ounces for the pant legs.
