I've been considering the purchase of new, lighter weight down inner garments for quite a while. And based on what I've been reading, I thought I would like the Flash pants and jacket best. But before buying them, I wanted to try them on to see how they actually felt and fit.

I found a small mountaineering shop that stocked some of the items of both brands. I liked the fit of the Flash pants, so I purchased them (they didn't have the Montbell pants in stock).

I was surprised to discover that I did not like the way the Flash Jacket fit me. I liked the fit of both the Montbell Alpine Parka and the Montbell U.L. Down Inner Jacket, but I chose the Inner Jacket because it was significantly lighter in weight (6.2 oz., weighed on my digital scale), and it was more like an inner garment (which is the only way I plan to wear it).

I also liked the possibility of wearing a vest under the jacket for maximum flexibility, and the lighter weight jacket made that option more practical. The shop also only had the WM vests in stock, but I loved how the Flash vest fit, so I bought it (one size smaller than the jacket to make sure the vest would not be compressed). The vest weighed only 3.75 oz. (on my scale), and it fits nicely under the Montbell U.L. Down Inner Jacket.

The jacket and vest combined weigh only 9.95 oz., which made them a slightly lighter choice than the Alpine jacket alone (which is about 10.6 oz.). I was very glad that I didn't purchase the Flash jacket without trying it on–otherwise it probably would have shown up in the gear swap!

im constantly amazed at how much people here buy stuff without trying them on … while it may somewhat limit yr options, at least you know itll fit and you likely wont be returning it due to fit …

the only exceptions i make are for stuff on deep discount, and gear where fit isnt a huge issue

this is especially true of pack and shoe recommendations … dont matter how light it is if it dun fit ….

if the glove doesnt fit … you must acquit !!!

well at least it keep the gear swap busy …

I have both a flash jacket and pants. I went to a store that had both the montbell and the wm flash.

I think there is a significant difference in loft (wm = better).

I think the wm compared to patagonia ultralite down jackets is night and day. Montbell and WM…well wm is slightly better.

Mark,

I agree that the WM has more loft. So I was happy that 2 out of 3 garments purchased were WM (I love my Flash pants and vest). But if I don't like the way a garment fits, I'm not all that likely to carry it on a trip (or to keep it). I think the Flash vest, combined with the Montbell jacket will provide plenty of warmth.

Yes I dont doubt a bit that fit wins out of loft.

I know when I tried on the MB stuff it was a tight fit, I would have to wear my vest outside a MB jacket I think.

Both really great gear, I just kinda posted as that was the only real difference I see in the two (outside of fit).

I'm constantly amazed at how much people here buy stuff without trying them.

Actually, I do that a lot. Bless whoever invented online shopping!! Why? Back in the dark ages, even though I live in metropolitan Los Angeles, I had a hard time picking out clothing. Too often, the stores didn't carry the specific brand/model — or all they got was XL and up for whatever reason. Driving store to store was neither efficient nor fun.

But with online shopping, at least all the choices are out there — within just a couple clicks — even foreign brands like Montane, etc.!! When in doubt about sizing, it's not difficult to call the store — or post the question here on this forum. And while it is a hassle to return stuff by mail — most all of our gear by definition is ultralight — and return postage is pretty minimal. Better than not being able to buy at all — and certainly no worse than driving around and around — as was too often the case in the past.

You never see …

"need to sell doesnt fit"

"runners too tight"

"pack doesnt feel comfortable"

"too tight across the chest"

And gear swap is really dead ;)

Hi Eric:

Actually, I see those all the time. But I also view them as yet another venue to unload unwanted gear. So, in addition to a quick try out and returning stuff that don't fit — nowadays, you can actually use them for a bit and still unload them and get most (if not all) of your money back! Even less of a reason to insist on "physical fondling before buying" — as in days of old.

YMMV as usual.
