I have prescription glasses and sunglasses and need a case to protect my glasses. I have one that is more simple than this one from EMS. Mine weighs 1.8oz with firm (but not hard-)side and zipper. Can that be improved upon? I have ultralight glasses that I’m worried about getting too banged up in a tightly stuffed pack.

I also have a Petzl Tikka Xp that I love, but it seems like I ought to be able to find something lighter than 3.2 oz. I’ve used it a number of times to light the trail when I’ve misjudged the time to the next stop, so I need it to be bright enough to show me the way, not just peer into the bottom of the mug.

What do you folks use?

There was a thread where someone recommended a type of rigid plastic tubing for glasses cases. You could buy by the length and add endcaps.

My current case is 2.3 oz and relatively bombproof (hard plastic); it was a gift, don't know the origin. I have a 1.0 oz. zippered case similar to yours, but wouldn't trust it not to be crushed in a pack.

For me, Jerry's DIY case would not offer enough protection for my glasses (I'd be completely blind without them), but I wonder if his setup plus a "U" of titanium sheet (lined with a thinner foam, perhaps) might offer both lightness and protection?2.3 oz case

I must say that I now have plenty of bathroom reading as I ponder the fate of the zipper sunglasses case. Love the tube idea.

Thanks to all!

I got my hard plastic glasses case at a dollar store. I checked there on the recommendation of someone in another thread here a while back. I don't know the weight and can't weigh it right now, but it's much lighter than any other hard case I've found. I tried a soft-sided case once, and my glasses got bent.

These are good quality. I measured them on my digital scale, and they weigh 1.25 ounces, including the hard shell case.

I can slip them into the pocket of my pack for easy retrieval. For those people (like me) who only need reading glasses, they are a nice UL option.

+1 on the micro readers. I also added Optix 20/20 stick-on bifocals to my regular sunglasses. They work well and I don't have to swap things around for a map-reading session, camera adjustments and the like.

I've tried soft cases and they are okay, but you know that a hard case is a better bet— something actually crush resistant. I'd love to see an aluminum or Ti case with slip-fit halves.

Outdoor Research makes a "padded cell" pocket that can go on your shoulder strap. I like it for a "trail office" and it does the trick with even wrap-around style glasses.

You could do away with your glasses entirely for the low, low cost of Lasik.
