I’m looking for a new pair of Trail runners and need a few recommendations to look at. I just returned a pair of NB 872’s. I felt as though I wasn’t getting enough for my money at $90 a pop and I like a square toe box instead of a “elf” round one.

So! I’m back looking for a good pair of trail runners.

Any suggestions? What’s popular? What is your favorite?

I’ll look at anything…

My total all time favorite: Nike 5.0 Free Trail. Sorta less is more, but that’s fine with me. Better balance, longer stride, no shin splint issues, plenty of underfoot protection for me.

Montrails have the square toe box I need. Of their trail runners, I use Vitesse, Susitna and Hardrock. The Vitesse model has the narrowest toe box of the three, although it’s still reasonable and fine for most people. Susitna and Hardrock models both have the wide toe box common to their ‘fusion’ and boot lines.

I use these for hiking, not trail running, so I can’t tell you how well they work for that.

ZAPPOS has great reviews on almost every trail shoe imaginable.
I’m looking to get a pair of Asics Trail Attack II’s right after I write this. Finishline.com has them on sale for $45.

I’m on my second pair of Vasque Velocity’s. I like them so much I’m on the lookout to add a backup pair for when the current one’s wear out.

i would recomend the flyroc 310’s for trail running. always enjoyed them, nice and lightweight and protective, open and breezy yet water resistant enough. good traction (slightly less when wet) and enough room with a size 10.5. though i wouldnt say i have wide feet or anything. my only complaint, is that i took them on a 100 mile AT hike last week, and there lack of cushioning really bothered my feet when pushing 20mi+ days. the heel cushioning is enough, but the bottom front just got beat up, especially after a road walk or rocky rooty section. i was walking in mud intentionally just for the cushion. anyone else have this problem or am i just dainty?
Brian, i was actually looking at the NB 872’s because i enjoyed thier 808 shoe so much, but ill see if i can try them on before i buy, i have a narrow foot and some time and ill wait for the price to drop. other then the price and no big toebox, would you recomend them Brian?
thanks!

I can highly recommend Salomon XA Pro 3D’s. They have a roomy toebox but a snug heel. Durability seems decent. The sole of the shoe is wider than most runners at the heel, giving considerable extra stability. The soles do a good job of protecting from rocks. They also entirely synthetic and dry very fast as they absorb almost no water, which was a huge plus for me.

For myself I felt that the 872, I grabbed the black color, had a way, way to narrow toebox. I returned them. I also balked at the 90 dollar price. For 45- 50 ish? Sure. Got get them. But at full price? No way.

I also picked up a pair of Nike Free Trails on eBay. I’ve those coming to test. But I’m still looking and give many thanks to all of the suggestions. Keep them coming…
