Well, you all talked me out of ordering a Big Sky Evolution 2P:

Now, what would be on your short list for alternatives? Reading some of the reviews of single wall shelters has me a bit concerned about what would happen in a heavy rain. Likewise, the reviews of some of the floored, tarp-like designs indicate problems (again with heavy rain) if the tent is not pitched just so.

Well, what are you looking for? What are your interests re: style size shape structure etc.

Tim, how about a pacific yurt with a couple of percheron draft horses or a gaggle of sherpanis dragging a new north face 4 season circus tent…[one of us just went to the dentist and is full of stupid pills.
I’ve been reallly pleased with msr’s hubba hubba, so much I also bought a muthahubba for family stuff.

Henry Shires tarptents are one alternative which I’m sure you are well aware of. I researched all the alternatives this year to buy a light weight shelter and I decided on one of the tarptents from Henry Shires. I bought the Rainshadow 2. The Rainshadow is about 10 oz. more than the Squall 2. I took the tent out for a four day trip this summer in the sierra’s. Very happy with the room in the Rainshadow as I shared the tent with my nephew. It didn’t rain so I can’t say how well it works in the rain. But, backpackgeartest.org has some nice reviews on the tarptents. One main reason I opted for a tarptent was that I didn’t want to feel enclosed like you do in a double wall tent. You feel more outside in a tarptent and are able to look outside if you want.

If I could sew, I’d definitely be making one of those… Any idea on the weight??

EDIT: Just found the specs on Ryan Jordan’s blog: 13.4 oz for an 8 by 8 pyramid.
