Tyvek seems to be a very popular material for ground sheets. I’ve used plastic ground sheets like you get at home depot, generally 2 or 3 mil thickness before and am wondering if the Tyvek has any advantages over the plastic sheet. The 3 mil plastic seems pretty durable and is lighter than Tyvek.

Thanks!

Dan,
Tyvek will seep when used as a groundsheet. It is better as a tarp since it breathes pretty well and tends to have less condensation than other single wall materials. Stay with the 3 mil plastic for the groundsheet which is actually waterproof.

A couple of years ago, UL tent makers advised customers to use Tyvek footprints. Being thicker, it gave the 1.3 ounce floors some protection. But under the pressure of a human, water would seep up between the Tyvek and the tent floor.
